Polly Bergen (born July 14, 1930 in Knoxville , Tennessee , as Nellie Paulina Burgin , † September 20, 2014 in Southbury , Connecticut ) was an American actress and singer .

Life and accomplishments

Polly Bergen made her debut as an actress in the late 1940s. She won an Emmy in 1956 for her appearance on the television series Playhouse 90 . Especially in the 1960s, she was seen more often in movies, for example in 1962 as the wife of Gregory Peck's lawyer in the thriller A Lure for the Beast . For her lead role in the film drama Women Who Must Not Love (1963) she was nominated for the Golden Globe Award and the Laurel Award . In the comedy Prince Consort in the White House (1964) she played the leading role of US President Leslie McCloud .

Bergen starred in the comedy Making Mr. Right (1987) alongside John Malkovich and Ann Magnuson . She was nominated for an Emmy in 1983 and 1989 for her roles in the television series Firestorm and Firestorm and Ashes . In 2001, Bergen was nominated for a Tony Award for her role in the musical Follies . In an episode of the award-winning television series The Sopranos , Bergen played a guest role in 2004 as the former lover of the father of mob boss Tony Soprano (played by James Gandolfini ) and John F. Kennedy .

Since 2005 she has appeared in several episodes of the television series Commander in Chief . There she played the role of Kate Allen , mother of US President Mackenzie Allen , who plays Geena Davis .

Polly Bergen was married three times: from 1954 to 1955 to Jerome Courtland , from 1956 to 1975 with the film producer Freddie Fields and from 1982 to 1990 with Jeffrey Endervelt. She had one child with Fields and adopted two children, including Pamela Kerry Fields and Peter Fields. Bergen converted to Judaism after marrying Fields . She died on September 20, 2014 at the age of 84.
