Piedecuesta is a municipality (municipio) in the department of Santander in Colombia . It is located 17 kilometers south of Bucaramanga and is part of the metropolitan region of Bucaramanga .

Piedecuesta is located in the province of Soto in the north of Santander at an altitude of about 1000 meters and has an average annual temperature of about 19 ° C. The city borders in the north Floridablanca and Tona , in the west Girón , in the east Santa Bárbara and in the south Guaca , Cepitá , Aratoca and Los Santos .

The municipality of Piedecuesta has 163,362 inhabitants, of whom 134,608 live in the urban part of the municipality (cabecera municipal) . 1,160,243 people live in the metropolitan region (as of 2019).

economy

The main industry of Piedecuesta is agriculture , especially the cultivation of corn , peas , wheat , onions and vegetables in the higher elevations and sugar cane , tobacco , cassava and tomatoes in the lower elevations. There is also an important industrial sector . Piedecuesta was traditionally known for the production of milk and honey , but this was pushed back by increasing urbanization .
