Cimitarra is a municipality (municipio) in the department of Santander in Colombia .

geography

Cimitarra is located in Santander in the province of Carare , of which it is the capital, at an altitude of 200 m above sea level. NN and has an average annual temperature of about 30 ° C. Cimitarra is about 200 km from Bucaramanga . The municipality borders Puerto Parra in the north, Puerto Berrío and Yondó in the Antioquia department in the northwest , Landázuri in the east and Bolívar and Landázuri in the south .

history

Before the arrival of the Spaniards the area now Cimitarra was from the indigenous people of Carare inhabited. However, this was almost completely wiped out. Cimitarra itself goes back to a town founded in the course of the conquest of the area in 1536. However, the place was not settled until 1922 because of the construction of a railway line. The government's goal was to develop the region for the extraction of cinchona bark , crude oil and coal . However, this first settlement was financially not profitable. A second settlement movement began in 1936 with the completion of a country road between Barbosa and Puerto Berrío. Cimitarra became the Corregimiento of Vélez in 1951 . Cimitarra has had parish status since 1966.

The most important branch of the economy is cattle production , which occupies 92% of the area of the commune and 70% of the working population work.
