Mogotes is a municipality (municipio) in the department of Santander in Colombia .

geography

The municipality of Mogotes is located in the province of Guanentá in eastern Santander in the Colombian Andes . The place itself is at an altitude of about 1700 meters and has an average annual temperature of 18.6 ° C. The municipality borders Molagavita and Curití in the north, San Joaquín in the east, Ocamonte , Charalá and Coromoro in the south and Curití, San Gil and Valle de San José in the west .

The municipality of Mogotes has 10,860 inhabitants, of which 3952 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

Before the arrival of the Spaniards, the indigenous Guanes lived in what is now the Mogote . The modern Mogotes was founded in 1703 by Cristóbal Gualdrón de la Peña. Since 1887 Mogotes has been a community in the present sense.

economy

The main industry in Mogotes is agriculture . In particular, sugar cane is grown for Panela , but corn , beans , coffee and natural fibers are also important. There is also cattle production .
