Avi Avital (* 1978 in Be'er Scheva ), Hebrew אבי אביטל , is an Israeli mandolinist .

Life

At the age of eight Avi Avital became acquainted with the mandolin . The neighbor, Jacob Reuven, one of the most renowned classical mandolinists in Israel, had just bought a new instrument. Avi heard him play and asked his mother to let him learn to play the mandolin. Jacob Reuven gave him his old instrument, and Avi learned to play it from Simcha Nathansohn at the town conservatory of music.

Nathansohn was the founder of the Be'er Sheva mandolin orchestra in the 1970s. These orchestras were popular in Israel in the 1950s and 1960s; almost every kibbutz had one. According to Avital, the tradition came from central and eastern Europe.

When Avital began his military service, he was accepted into the Israeli Army's program for talented musicians. So he was able to continue his studies at the music academy in Jerusalem and also give concerts. After his discharge from the army, he decided to pursue a career as a professional musician. He moved to Milan to complete his musical training at the Conservatorio Cesare Pollini di Padova .

In 2010 he gave concerts in Italy, Germany and the United States. He played with leading orchestras and musicians such as Mstislav Rostropovich and the soprano Dawn Upshaw . He also works with a number of composers who have dedicated works to him, including the Georgian composer Josef Bardanashvili . With the New York Metropolis Ensemble he recorded a mandolin concerto that he had developed together with the Israeli composer Avner Dorman since 2006 . This concert combines sounds of the Middle East with elements of bluegrass and Russian folk music. The Jerusalem Post wrote that the piece brought out the moving sounds of the mandolin brilliantly, while the New York Times highlighted the breathtaking agility of the soloist Avi Avital. The piece earned him a 2011 Grammy nomination in the category Best Solo Instrument Performance with Orchestra . This made him the first mandolin player in the world who had ever been nominated for a Grammy.

Avi Avital had other concert appearances in Carnegie Hall , at Lincoln Center , in the Berlin Philharmonic , in the KKL Luzern , in the Concert Hall of the Forbidden City in Beijing and in the Wigmore Hall . The Berlin Symphony Orchestra , the Potsdam Chamber Academy , the Berlin Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra , the Orchester National de Montpellier , Oxford Philomusica , the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra , the Geneva Camerata , the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra , the Milanese Pomeriggi Musicali and the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra accompanied his Concert appearances. He worked extensively with Giora Feidman and Richard Galliano and appeared at the summer festivals in Tanglewood , Lucerne , Spoleto and Ravenna .

His published recordings span such diverse musical genres as klezmer , baroque music and contemporary classical music . He currently publishes exclusively with Deutsche Grammophon . His debut recording there was his transcription of the Bach Concerts for harpsichord and violin . His second CD Between Worlds with chamber music by Ernest Bloch and Manuel de Falla as well as Bulgarian folklore compositions was released in 2014. His third CD Vivaldi was released in March 2015. His interpretation of various concerts by Antonio Vivaldi is accompanied by the Venice Baroque Orchestra .

In 2015 Avi Avital was awarded the ECHO Klassik in the concert recording of the year category.
