Guamal is a municipality ( municipio ) in the department of Magdalena in Colombia .

geography

Guamal is located in the south of Magdalena on the Brazo de Mompox arm of the Río Magdalena at an altitude of 20 meters, 396 km from Santa Marta . The municipality borders San Sebastián de Buenavista in the north, Astrea in the department del Cesar in the east, El Banco in the south and Margarita and San Fernando in the Bolivar department in the west .

The municipality of Guamal has 28,277 inhabitants, of which 7997 live in the urban part (cabecera municipal) of the municipality (as of 2019).

history

Guamal was officially founded in 1747 by José Fernando de Mier y Guerra under the name Nuestra Señora del Carmen de Barrancas . The region was inhabited by the indigenous people of the Chimilas. Guamal received parish status in 1886.

economy

The main industries of Guamal are agriculture , cattle production and fishing . The main crops are corn , cassava and citrus fruits .

traffic

Guamal Airport ( IATA code : GAA ), inaugurated in 1962, is currently not in operation. The nearest airports in Mompós and El Banco are only 45 and 50 minutes away, respectively. The originally most important transport route by ship over the Río Magdalena has been largely displaced by the improved road infrastructure.
