River course
The Río Chinguales has its source in the Cordillera Real , about 25 km south of the city of Tulcán . The headwaters are in the province of Carchi at an altitude of about 3750 m . The Río Chinguales initially flows about 10 km to the north and then turns to the east. The E10 trunk road now follows the course of the river. The Río Chinguales forms the border with the province of Sucumbíos . From the confluence of the Río Pun from the left, the Río Chinguales forms the state border with Colombia . The Río Chinguales separates the Departamento de Nariño (municipality of Ipiales ) on the left bank of the river from the province of Sucumbíos on the right bank. At river kilometer 64, the Río San Francisco meets the Río Chinguales from the north. This now turns to the south. Up to river kilometer 32 the Río Chinguales forms the border with Colombia. The Río Chinguales flows further south through the province of Sucumbíos. Finally, the Río Chinguales joins the Río Cofanes coming from the west to form the Río Aguarico. The Río Chinguales drains an area of around 1070 km².
