Knud Hertling

Knud Ludvig Johannes Hertling (born January 7, 1925 in Paamiut ; † October 24, 2010 ) was a Greenlandic - Danish politician ( Siumut ) and writer .

Life

Knud Hertling was born in Paamiut in 1925 under the name Knud Ludvig Johannes Olsen, the son of the poet and composer Peter Pavia Eigil Nathanael Olsen (1892–1930) and his wife Jørgine Sofie Frederikke Elisabeth Andersen (1892–1950). He grew up in Aasiaat . Together with his younger brother, the later lawyer Jørgen Hertling (1928-2017), he was adopted in 1947 by the Danish pastor Svend Hertling (1905-1979), who was active in Aasiaat at the time.

Knud Hertling attended school in Aasiaat from 1932 to 1939 and then to Efterskole there until 1941 . From 1941 to 1943 he attended Grønland's seminary in Nuuk and then again a private school in Aasiaat. He then moved to Denmark in 1945, where he attended a Mellemskole for a year. Finally, in 1949, he graduated from the Metropolitan Polans and enrolled at Københavns Universitet , where he passed the state law examination in 1956.

In the same year he became secretary in the Greenland Ministry . Then he was the agent of the Landshøvding in Nuuk from 1961 to 1964, first for Finn Nielsen , then for Niels Otto Christensen . In 1964 he was elected to the Folketing for Greenland's Northern District and in the same year a member of Grønlandsråd , which he remained until 1971. He remained a member of the Folketing until 1973. From October 11, 1971 to October 5, 1972 he was Greenland Minister in the Krag III cabinet , then he held the same post in the Jørgensen I cabinet until December 19, 1973 . From 1973 to 1977 he was secretary for Grønlandsråd and from 1976 to 1985 advisor for Den Kongelige Grønlandske Handel . In 1962 Hertling was a member of the board of Grønlands Idrætsforbund .

Hertling campaigned for more Greenlandic self-determination and in 1969 founded the moderate socialist and nationalist party Sukaq , the first party in Greenland, which was dissolved again in 1971 . He later became a member of the Siumut , of which he was chairman in Denmark. In 1973 he helped initiate the Hjemmestyreudvalg, which laid the foundation for the introduction of the Hjemmestyre in 1979. He was also a co-initiator of Det Grønlandske Hus in Copenhagen and a board member of Det Grønlandske Selskab . On June 21, 1989 he was awarded the Nersornaat in silver and on November 30, 2000 in gold. In 1995 he received the Den Grønlandske Forfatterforening (Atuakkiortut) award .

Knud Hertling was married twice. His first marriage was on March 21, 1953 in Copenhagen, the office assistant Lilli Hansen (* 1925), daughter of the businessman Laurits Hansen (1898–1957) and his wife Mette Marie Christensen (1889–1936). The marriage ended in divorce in 1972. Through this marriage he is the grandfather of the director Emile Hertling Péronard (* 1979). Then on September 14, 1974 in Gentofte he married the doctor's secretary Dorthe Heinberg (* 1938), daughter of the editor Hugo Heinberg (1898–?) And his wife Johanne Margrethe Nielsen (1916–?). He later lived on Fejø and died in 2010 at the age of 85.
