Architecture and history

The two-storey villa was probably built in 1881 by the architect Max Behrendt for the manufacturer Ferdinand Steffens. Steffens was the owner of the chicory and chocolate factory Mueller and Vistula Nachf. , Which from 1914 Dom-Chokolade factory Gebr. Steffens & Co. changed its name. The company premises stretched directly behind the villa, parts of the factory buildings have been preserved. On the north side of the villa there was initially a garden with a fountain.

The villa was designed in the representative style of an Italian palazzo and is ten-axially wide facing the street. The two central axes are closely combined and were originally spanned by a gable. Left and right there are two-axis flat side risalites . The cuboid, symmetrical building made of clinker is covered by a flat roof. The cornice area was particularly emphasized as a cornice . In the mezzanine , instead of ventilation openings, additional windows were added and the eaves area changed by removing the cornice, which architecturally impaired the original appearance. At the corners of the building there is a more powerful ashlar. The lavish decorations are designed in the style of neo-renaissance and neo-baroque . The window openings of the side risalites are framed like an aedicle. The column decor is beautifully designed. There are also niches on the upper floor in which there are figures that represent fertility and abundance. Above the windows there are split gables .

The cellar vault of a previous building, a chicory factory built in 1830, was probably included in the construction of the villa . The basement of a side wing is made of cross vaults and transverse arches built from bricks. Inside there is a large staircase with a remarkable cast iron railing .

The villa is considered to be significant in terms of industrial history and an important testimony to the Magdeburg food industry.

In the local register of monuments , the villa is listed as a historical building under registration number 094 82689 .
