The Río San Miguel is an approximately 295 km long right tributary of the Río Putumayo in Colombia and Ecuador .

River course

The Río San Miguel rises in the southern Colombian Cordillera Oriental at an altitude of about 3000  m . The headwaters are located in the Departamento de Nariño in the south of Colombia. It initially flows 20 km south through the mountains and reaches the border with Ecuador. Then it turns to the east and flows through the Amazon lowlands at the foot of the mountains. He forms the state border. At river km 238 the Río Rancheria , at river km 232 the Río Rumiyacu and at river km 229 the Río Churuyacu , all on the left side, meet the Río San Miguel. The river then forms the border between the Departamento de Putumayo in the north and the Ecuadorian province of Sucumbíos in the south. At river kilometer 216 the Río Bermeja flows from the right into the Río San Miguel. For the last 110 kilometers it flows within Ecuador. Finally, it meets the Río Putumayo on the border with Colombia, near the small town of Puerto El Carmen de Putumayo. The catchment area covers an area of ​​around 4100 km².
