Sonnenastrilde ( Neochmia ), also known as sun amadines , are a genus of the finch family . In their behavior and their plumage, they show similarities to the African amaranth and the blue tassels .

Systematics

The number of species in this genus is disputed. In the opinion of Horst Bielfeld , who published the German-language standard work on finches, the rushes belong to a genus of their own due to their color, tail length and behavior. From his point of view, the similarities between Sonnenastrild and Binsenastrild are only the expression of a convergent development that is adapted to the same conditions. In 1993, Clement only lists two species for this species, namely the sun tiger and the rush tiger. The ornithologists Jürgen Nicolai and Joachim Steinbacher list three species in 2001 ( Sonnenastrild , Binsenastrild and Dornastrild ). BirdLife Factsheet, however, counts four species in this genus. This assignment is also followed here.

distribution

Both the rush and the suntan are native to Australia . Both species prefer to be found near bodies of water, in swamps and lowlands with tall grass, rushes, reeds and sedges.
