Jay Rodriguez (actually Hernán Ramiro Rodríguez Sierra , born September 17, 1967 ) is an American musician ( tenor saxophone , flute , also composition ) of modern jazz .

Live and act

Rodriguez moved with his family from Barranquilla , Colombia to New York at the age of four . At the age of eight he began to learn clarinet in elementary school, later he had lessons with Phil Woods (1982-84), Joe Allard, Tito D'Rivera (the father of Paquito D'Rivera ) and Joe Henderson . At age 15 he played lead alto saxophone with Tito Puente , then graduated from New York High School for Performing Arts with Honors to study at the Manhattan School of Music and the New School .

Rodriguez had first appearances in Latin bands, jam sessions in Harlem and studio work for commercials. Since the late 1980s he has played with Bill Ware , Medeski, Martin & Wood , in Dizzy Gillespies United Nations Orchestra , the Gil Evans Orchestra , with David Murray , Doc Cheatham , Kenny Barron and Roy Hargrove . He is also musical director and founding member of the New York Groove Collective ; the band played in the opening act or accompanied music greats such as James Brown , Tupac Shakur and Isaac Hayes , Erykah Badu , The Roots and BB King . Her albums Declassified and People People Music Music (2006) received Grammy nominations . In the field of jazz he was involved in 32 recording sessions between 1992 and 2017. Under his own name he released the albums Live at the Fez - NYC 07.03.03 and Your Sound . Jay Rodriguez leads a quartet with Pete Drungle (piano), Lonnie Plaxico (bass) and Pheeroan akLaff (drums), as well as a trio with Alex Blake and Victor Jones .
