The German School Barranquilla ( Spanish Colegio Alemán de Barranquilla ) is the oldest of the four German schools abroad in Colombia and one of the oldest German schools abroad in Latin America . It was founded in 1912 by members of the German colony in Barranquilla and is today a place of encounter and intercultural exchange in an innovative and multimedia learning center.

history

founding

In 1912 the German School Association was founded by members of the German colony in Barranquilla with the aim of opening a German-speaking kindergarten. It was possible to win the support of the Foreign Office and on February 9, 1913, the newly founded German School Barranquilla was able to start teaching. In 1930 a school building of its own in the Bellavista district was acquired. Some of the students were children of local Germans and the majority were Colombians or nationals of other countries.

Closure & reopening

During the Second World War the school had to be closed in 1942; but was reopened in 1956. The German lessons initially faded into the background and the lessons previously practiced in German no longer took place, so that this ultimately led to the cancellation of the German school allowance. In March 1963 a new school building was built with support from Germany. After that, the German language was given a higher priority in class (the language of instruction, however, remained basically Spanish ) and language diploma exams were introduced.

New building

In 2002, a new school building between Barranquilla and Puerto Colombia was completed and a mixed-language International Baccalaureate was introduced, which gives graduates direct access to German universities. Today only about 1% of the students are German as their mother tongue, the rest learn German as a foreign language. In 2009 the school was ranked 68th in the nationwide ranking of schools in Colombia.

The school sponsor is the Corporación Cultural Colegio Alemán . In 2016/17, 925 students were registered.
