Knox Martin (born February 12, 1923 in Barranquilla , Colombia ) is an American sculptor and painter .

Life

Knox Martin was born in Colombia as the eldest son of military and test pilots William Knox Martin and Isabelle Vieko. His father was an artist, poet and pioneer in being the first to venture over the Andes . In 1927 he was killed in a car accident in Watertown, near New York. His widow and three sons moved from Salem , Virginia to New York after his death .

After serving as a soldier in World War II , Knox Martin studied at the Art Students League of New York from 1946 to 1950 . There Harry Sternberg, Vaclav Vytlacil, Will Barnet, and Morris Kantor were among his fellow students. In 1954, Knox Martin's friend Franz Kline brought a painting of his to the Stable Gallery. Gallery owner Charles Egan saw it there and asked Martin if he would like to show his work in a show for the tenth anniversary of the Egan Gallery.

Martin lives and works in New York and is assigned to Abstract Expressionism . He is primarily a muralist in the style and content of muralism . His work can be seen on the walls of buildings in New York. Paintings and sculptures by him can be found in the Whitney Museum of American Art , the Brooklyn Museum , the Portland Art Museum , the Baltimore Museum of Art , the Denver Art Museum , the Museum of Art Oklahoma City , the Berkeley Art Museum .

Knox Martin is a Master of Arts at the Art Students League in New York and was Professor at Yale University in 2002 . He has also taught at New York University , the University of Minnesota and the International School of Art in Umbria . In 2002 Knox Martin was inducted into the National Academy of Design . Martin won an award from the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation .

In the fall of 2010, Knox Martin designed a solo exhibition of his black and white paintings in New York City.
