Brutal Youth (Engl. "Brutal Youth") is a music album by Elvis Costello , which at March 8, 1994 Warner Bros. released. The album is primarily assigned to the genre of rock music, but also contains elements from pop and punk rock . It's on the list of 1001 albums to listen to before you die .

production

Cover and record company only name Elvis Costello as the artist, as all the songs come from his pen. However, it is de facto a reunion of Costello with The Attractions. The Guinness Book of British Hits lists Elvis Costello and the Attractions as an artist. The Attractions -members Steve Nieve (keyboards) and Pete Thomas (percussion) play on all of the album; Attractions bassist Bruce Thomas can be heard on songs 3, 4, 6, 9 and 10. Costello himself represents him on tracks 2 and 8, and Nick Lowe, the producer of earlier albums by Elvis Costello and the Attractions, on the other tracks . Since 1986 (Blood and Chocolate) it was Costello's first long-playing record with his band; the interim albums were recorded with session musicians.

Musical description

Like the cast, the sound of Brutal Youth is reminiscent of the earlier years of Elvis Costello's career; orchestral support or chamber music accompaniment - as on The Juliet Letters, published a year earlier and recorded with the Brodsky Quartet - is missing. Brutal Youth already leads in the cover art, with black and white photos of the young Declan MacManus from 1958 and 1963, back to Costello's youth - symbolic of the return to rock 'n' roll that Costello and his band are performing here. But Costello wouldn't be Costello if he didn't present an “aromatic mixture of Country & Western, Rhythm & Blues, Ballads, Soul, Folk”. "As if not a moment of dissolution had taken place, the Attractions for Costellos are once again staging exorbitant songwriting ingenious soundscapes," says the critic of Intro . The critic of the All Music Guide sees a flaw in the fact that Mitchell Froom produced the record very cautiously. He believes that if Nick Lowe had taken over the production alongside his bass guitar, Brutal Youth would have become even more rocky.
