Jake Riviera

Jake Riviera (born Andrew Jakeman in Edgware , Middlesex , February 1948 ) is a British music manager. The artists he oversaw included Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe . Together with Dave Robinson he founded the music label Stiff Records .

biography

During his school days in London Riviera was a member of various bands. In the early 1970s he became the road manager of the pub rock group Chilli Willi and the Red Hot Peppers . For the marketing of the band he worked with the graphic artist Barney Bubbles .

In 1975 Riviera organized “Naughty Rhythms”, a concert tour with Chilli Willi, Dr. Feelgood and Kokomo . After the dissolution of Chilli Willi, Riviera became tour manager of Dr. Feelgood, who were traveling in the USA in spring 1976 . Back in England he founded the independent label Stiff Records with Dave Robinson .

Stiff signed The Damned , who were the first punk band to release a single in October 1976 . The artists Riviera hired for Stiff also included Elvis Costello and Nick Lowe . Barney Bubbles also worked for the label and designed record sleeves, posters and marketing campaigns for Lowe, The Damned and Costello, but also other musicians such as Ian Dury and Wreckless Eric .

In the fall of 1977, Riviera left Stiff Records to join Radar Records . He took Costello and Lowe as customers. In 1980 Riviera founded the F-Beat label together with Andrew Lauder; as with Radar, he also worked here with Barney Bubbles. F-Beat existed until the mid-1980s. Riviera continued to work as the manager of Costello and Lowe.
