Dr. Feelgood is a British rock band that has existed with changing line-ups since 1971. It is one of the few bands that have enjoyed equal success in the British blues boom and punk era. The group, which was mainly active in the 1970s, became known for songs such as Back in the Night , Roxette and Milk and Alcohol .

history

Stencil of the Dr. Feelgood mascot as used by the band in the 1970s and 1980s

The band, founded in 1971 in Canvey Island near Southend, Essex, by singer Lee Brilleaux and guitarist Wilko Johnson (real name: John Wilkinson) was soon followed by bassist John B. Sparks and drummer "The Big Figure" (real name: John Martin ) added.

The name of the band was taken from the song Dr. Feelgood borrowed from the English band Johnny Kidd & The Pirates .

Like many other pub rock bands, such as Eddie & the Hot Rods , also from Southend, Dr. Feelgood is mainly known for their live performances. In addition, however, albums such as Down by the Jetty and Malpractice were very popular. The band's breakthrough came in 1976 with the live album Stupidity , which landed at number one in the English charts .

After the next album, Sneakin 'Suspicion , Wilko Johnson left the group due to internal differences and was replaced by Gypie Mayo (civil: John Cawthra). The band was not as successful with Mayo as in earlier times with Johnson, but in 1979 they still managed to reach a place in the top ten of the charts with Milk and Alcohol .

After Mayo left the band in 1980, Dr. Feelgood did not record, but continued to record and tour with changing new guitarists - "Johnny Guitar", Gordon Russell and Steve Walwyn. In 1982 Sparks and "The Big Figure" left the group and were replaced by Phil Mitchell (bass) and Kevin Morris (drums). On April 7, 1994, the last remaining founding member, singer Lee Brilleaux, died of cancer . With Pete Gage (vocals) and Robert Kane two new band members were added. Since the late 1990s, Dr. Feelgood (without original members) on tour again and again. On October 23, 2013, the former guitarist Gypie Mayo passed away after a long illness at the age of 62.

Name similarities

In addition to the band, a song and an album by Mötley Crüe and Aretha Franklin bear the name Dr. Feel good . In addition, the blues pianist Piano Red published some of his works under the pseudonym Dr. Feelgood & the Interns . The successful Swedish pop duo Roxette named themselves after a Dr. Feelgood title. A song by the German heavy metal band Helloween , like the band, Dr. Feel good . Dr. Feelgood was the nickname of the German-born doctor Max Jacobson (1900-1979), who treated John F. Kennedy and other celebrities; other doctors also had this nickname.

Bob Marley mentioned the band in his song Punky Reggae Party ("The Wailers will be there, The Damned , The Jam , The Clash - Maytals will be there, Dr. Feelgood too").
