Piano Red

Willie Perryman (born October 19, 1911 in Hampton , Georgia - † July 25, 1985 in Atlanta , Georgia) was an American blues pianist and singer, also known as Piano Red and Dr. Feelgood became known.

Like his brother Rufus , who appeared and recorded as Speckled Red, Willie Perryman was an albino . From a young age he played in honky tonks and juke joints in Georgia, Alabama, and Tennessee .

In the 1930s Perryman appeared with Blind Willie McTell as "The Dixie Jazz Hounds". In 1936 they made recordings together, but they were not published. His nickname "Piano Red" comes from this time.

In 1950 he had a huge hit with Rockin 'with Red , which is widely regarded as an early rock' n 'roll recording and was later re-recorded by a number of well-known performers, including Little Richard , Little Jimmy Dickens and Jerry Lee Lewis . Other hits from "Piano Red" were Red's Boogie , The Wrong Yo Yo , Laying the Boogie and Just Right Bounce .

In the early 1960s, Willie Perryman made recordings under the name “Dr. Feelgood & the Interns ”. The piece Doctor Feel-Good made it in 1962 in the pop music charts .

In the 1970s and early 1980s, Perryman toured Europe several times. He also played when Chancellor Helmut Schmidt took office and supported the election campaign of US President Jimmy Carter .

Willie Perryman was diagnosed with cancer in 1984 and died of cancer the following year.
