Ace was a British pub rock and soft rock band from the 1970s, who achieved a top 3 hit in the United States in 1974 with How Long .

Band history

Founded in 1972 in Sheffield as Ace Flash & the Dynamos , the quintet changed its name to Ace shortly afterwards . Their first album Five-A-Side (1974) and their first single How Long (Has This Been Going On) , written by singer and keyboardist Paul Carrack himself, were particularly impressive in the USA. How Long was inspired by Carrack after he found out that bassist Terry Corner had been secretly working for other bands on the side.

Despite good reviews, the second album was no longer a great success and a second larger single hit was denied them, which is why they are also rated as a one-hit wonder . After a third album in 1977 was also unsuccessful, they split up.

Fran Byrne, Paul Carrack and Terry Comer intermittently joined Frankie Miller as part of the backing band. And Paul Carrack in particular later had great success as a soloist and with various other bands such as Squeeze , Mike & The Mechanics and Roxy Music . Among other things, he recorded the ace hit How Long again in 1996 and reached the charts with it.
