Starset is an alternative- and synth rock - band from Columbus . It was founded in 2013 by electrical engineer Dustin Bates.

history

Starset was in 2013 by Dustin Bates, the former frontman of the rock band Down Play , founded. Bates found his interest in astronomy after graduating as an electrical engineer . As Downplay was gradually breaking up, Bates asked DeChant if he would like to start a new band with 2 other members. Bates emphasized, however, that downplay was not over and that the start-up of Starset was more of a side project than a replacement. In August 2014, Bates wrote on Reddit that he was working on new material for downplay, but it was never published.

Bates often mentions a so-called "Starset Society" in interviews, which is supposed to be the real reason for the formation of the band. According to this, the chairman is said to have contacted Bates and suggested that he start a band. This association of independent scientists is said to have received a message from the Barnard's arrow star , behind which a warning to humanity was hiding. However, this story is just the fictional background story that is supposed to give the band's concept - that is, the dissemination of the received message through their own songs - a red thread.

2013–2015: Transmissions

On July 8, 2014, she released her first album, Transmissions . The album is characterized by long, instrumental passages at the end of the actual song, which run like a red thread through the album and start the next song. The band calls their concerts "demonstrations" and played mostly as the opening act for Breaking Benjamin on their first tour .

2016–2018: Vessels

On October 28, 2016 Starset released their first single Monster and on December 16, 2016 the single Back To The Earth , on January 6, 2017 followed the single Ricochet from their studio album Vessels , which was released on January 20, 2017 . The lyrics are about genetic engineering , the discovery and population of exoplanets and the creation of artificial life and artificial intelligence . Just like in Transimissions , the band wants to draw attention to the dangers of these controversial topics. Many similarities with the band Red are ascribed to the album , which is said to be due to the joint producer Rob Graves.

Vessels was meant to be more of a personal journey for the listener than Transmissions attempted. According to Bates, Vessels is much more complex and changeable than Transmissions, so there are no longer the typically long passages at the end of each song and in a few songs Bates' vocals also switch to shouting .

The stage shows should be designed to be interactive through augmented reality and appear even more effective through new costumes. In January 2018, Bates told Billboard magazine that, after Vessels, he would now like to focus on another music project called "MNQN".

Since 2019: Divisions

On May 13, 2019, Starset announced that the third album would be released on September 13, 2019. Spring 2020 tour dates for Europe and the UK were announced on July 2nd, 2019. Her single "Manifest" from the album was released on August 15, 2019 and "Where the Skies End" on August 21, 2019.

style

By mixing scientific and astronomical themes, the band is assigned a style of electro rock and symphonic elements, which they call "cinematic rock". Starset's style is described by journalist Dave Richards as mixing the open-hearted sounds of the band Muse with the emotional strength of the band Breaking Benjamin . Bates describes the style itself as a mix of electronic symphonies with heavy guitar riffs .

Starset influences include Hans Zimmer , Nine Inch Nails , Sigur Rós , 30 Seconds to Mars , Deftones , Angels and Airwaves , Breaking Benjamin, Red , Linkin Park and Skillet .
