Power Trip is an American crossover band from Dallas , Texas that was formed in 2008.

history

The band was formed in 2008 and originally consisted of bassist Chris Whetzel, drummer Marcus Johnson, singer Riley Gale and guitarists Blake "Rossover" Ibanez and Nicky Stewart. In the same year a first demo with five songs appeared. In 2009 Johnson was replaced by Chris Ulsh. Then came an EP with four songs under the title Armageddon Blues . The group also began touring - first through Texas, then through the Southwest and California, and finally across the United States. After almost a year of touring and a break in which Ibanez devoted himself to school, a second, self-titled EP followed in 2011, which contains three songs. Then they went on tour again, and the band could also be seen at the Pitchfork Music Festival in 2012 . In 2013 a record deal was signed with Southern Lord . In the same year the group also took part in the South by Southwest . In June of the same year, the debut album was released under the name Manifest Decimation . The phonogram was produced and mixed by Arthur Rizk and Daniel Schmuck in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania and Argyle , Texas, and mastered by Rizk at Solomon's Gate in Philadelphia.

A year later, Power Trip released the EP The Armageddon Blues Sessions in February , which, in addition to the songs from Armageddon Blues, also contains two songs that had not appeared on the EP Armagesson Blues . In November 2014, the live album Live Series followed on compact cassette . At the beginning of 2016 Power Trip played a tour through the USA as the opening act for Lamb of God , in which Anthrax and Deafheaven also played, before Power Trip released a split EP in June together with Integrity , to which Integrity contributed three and Power Trip two songs. Another US tour followed in the fall of 2016, supporting The Black Dahlia Murder and Napalm Death . At the same time Power Trip recorded their second studio album Nightmare Logic , which was again produced by Arthur Rizk. The album was released on February 24, 2017 via Southern Lord. After a co-headlining tour with Iron Reagan , two tours followed: First Power Trip played first with Obituary , Exodus and Dust Bolt and then with Cannibal Corpse and Gatecreeper . At the 2017 Loudwire Music Awards , Power Trip was recognized in the Metal Song of the Year category for Executioner's Tax (Swing of the Ax) . Power Trip were also nominated in the categories Metal Artist of the Year and Metal Album of the Year , but both prizes went to Avenged Sevenfold . The editors of the online magazine Loudwire named Nightmare Logic Metal Album of the Year 2017.

On August 25, 2020, front man Riley Gale died unexpectedly at the age of 35.

style

Thom Jurek from Allmusic described the music as crossover thrash metal , in which the band also incorporated elements from hardcore punk , speed metal and death metal . Similarities to the Cro-Mags , Violence , Nuclear Assault and Leeway can be heard. Joachim Hiller from Ox-Fanzine felt reminded of Ludichrist when he heard Manifest Decimation . The band revive the sound of Leeway, Cro-Mags and the Crumbsuckers , who “ turned their backs on the original New York Hardcore or added massive metallic elements to heavy drumming, bombastic production and simple, sharp guitar riffs and echoing vocals ". However, the songs turned out a bit monotonous.
