Gatecreeper is an American death metal band from Tucson and Phoenix , Arizona that was formed in 2013.

history

The band was formed in September 2013. The band name is a play on the term " gatekeeper ". In April 2014 a first self-titled EP was released digitally , which contains four songs. After a music video for the song Force Fed had been created, the EP was re-released in October as a 12 "single on King of the Monsters Records and Protagonist Music . In 2015 they went on their first tour along the west coast of the United States . Shortly afterwards, a split release followed with Take Over and Destroy , for which the band contributed the song Poisoned Mind . In the second half of the year the tour continued on the east coast of the USA . In addition, the band recorded material for further split releases. These were released in 2016: One with Young and in the Way on A389 Recordings and one with Homewrecker , Outer Heaven and Scorched on Escapist Records . After another west coast tour, which also included Of Feather and Bone from Colorado , the band went to Homewrecker Studios in Tucson to record their debut album Sonoran Depravation with producer Ryan Bram . The nine songs were mixed by Kurt Ballou at Godcity Studios and mastered by Brad Boatright . The album was released in 2016 on Relapse Records . In August of that year, a music video for the song Desperation had already been released. The songs Stronghold and Rotting As One were also released as single before the album was released. After the album was released, it went on a US tour with Skeletonwitch , Iron Reagan and Oathbreaker in September and October . In the following year, the live album Unleashed in the Middle East followed in self-release . In March of that year a tour of the USA was also held together with Toxic Holocaust and Nails .

style

According to Sebastian Schilling from Rock Hard , Gatecreeper’s music should please fans of traditional Death Metal as much as people who current US bands with a sludge and hardcore punk background would. In an interview with him, Chase Mason stated that the title Sonoran Depravation refers to the Sonoran desert , the habitat of the members. The band tried to illustrate the harsh climate there with the album title and the cover artwork. The lyrics would be about personal experiences, apathy , fiction and death. Schilling found the group sounded heavily like Obituary , Cyanide, and the occasional Bolt Thrower on the album . In addition, the band's roots lie in sludge and hardcore punk, but overall they sound like metal . Mason confirmed that the band was influenced by these three groups and added Swedish death metal bands such as Dismember and Grave as well as Crowbar , Merauder , Hatebreed and other hardcore punk, doom metal and sludge bands as influences. Schilling had reviewed the album two editions earlier and also showed a comparison to Bolt Thrower and Obituary, whereby the songs would focus particularly on the groove . The group avoids sounding like a copy of the named bands. Occasionally, melodies would also be interspersed. Because of the singing, which is “mostly deep and rattling”, comparisons with Funebrarum and Disma are not absurd. All in all, the music can be seen as a mixture of classic and modern dark death metal.
