Masimba Tafirenyika

Masimba Tafirenyika is a journalist from Zimbabwe who has been Director of the United Nations Information Center (UNIC) in Pretoria since 2017 .

Life

After attending school, Tafirenyika began studying economics at the University of Zimbabwe in Harare , graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (BA Economics). A post-graduate studies in International Affairs at Columbia University , he finished with a Master of Arts (MA International Affairs). In 1985 he began his professional career as a research coordinator at the Southern African Research and Documentation Center in Harare, where he worked until 1992. He also worked as a freelance journalist in the fields of political and economic development. He was then an associate visiting researcher for a Georgetown University research program from 1992-1993 conducted by the think tank Center of Concern in Washington, DC .

In 1996 Tafirenyika became a research analyst in the Peacekeeping Operations Department (DPKO) in the UN Secretariat and was then an Associate Political Affairs Officer in the UN Office in Liberia from 1998 to 2001 , before being Head of Public Relations at the UN Mission in Sierra from 2001 to 2003 Leone was. He then returned to the UN Secretariat's Peacekeeping Operations Department, where he was a consultant for Liberia and Sierra Leone between 2003 and 2004 and then from 2004 to 2006 a public relations officer in the UN Press and Information Department . He then worked for the first time at the United Nations Information Center (UNIC) in Pretoria , where he was initially deputy director from 2006 to 2008 and then managing director between 2008 and 2009. In 2009 he returned to the UN Press and Information Department, where he was both head of the Africa department and editor-in-chief of the Africa Renewal magazine published by this department until 2017 .

On May 15, 2017, Tafirenyika was appointed Director of the United Nations Information Center (UNIC) in Pretoria by UN Secretary General António Guterres .
