Peter "Pete" Doherty (born March 12, 1979 in Hexham , England ) is a British rock musician. He is the front man of indie rock bands Babyshambles and The Libertines .

Life

Childhood (1979–1996)

Peter Doherty, whose father served as an officer in the British military, grew up in London , Belfast , Liverpool , Krefeld and Cyprus . He has a younger and an older sister.

At 17, he won a British Council poetry competition and was sent to Russia as a cultural ambassador . He studied English literature at Adinah Kroner College at the University of London , but dropped out in his first year. He then moved into an apartment in north London with Carl Barât , whom he met in 1996 through his sister. A deep friendship developed between the two, which they expressed in music, poetry and artistic representations.

The Libertines (1997-2004)

Peter Doherty (2008)

Doherty and Barât formed the band The Libertines in the late 1990s , which produced two critically acclaimed albums: Up the Bracket and The Libertines . The former is characterized by fast and rough guitar sounds, coupled with memorable melodies and patriotic text passages. The second work is characterized by lyrical songs that reflect the tragedy and drama of the breakdown of the drug-ridden relationship - "Cornered the boy kicked out at the world - The world kicked back, a lot fucking harder now". The end of this very productive period was when Doherty broke into Barât's apartment, where he stole his laptop and musical instruments and sent them for drugs.

The band became known with their first releases in 2002. Doherty's drug problems and internal disagreements led to his expulsion from the band two years later.

On July 12, 2003, his son Astile Louis, whose first name he had a tattoo on his neck, was born in Camden, London. Astile's mother is the English singer and songwriter Lisa Moorish .

In early 2004, before his break with The Libertines, Doherty worked with the British poet Wolfman . Together they recorded the single For Lovers , which rose to the UK Top 10 in April of that year. Despite a nomination for the Ivor Novello Award , Doherty hardly earned anything with the song, as the publishing rights had already been sold for a relatively small sum.

Babyshambles, solo album and libertines reunion (from 2004)

Doherty founded the Babyshambles shortly before he left the Libertines. He actually wanted to call the Babyshambles Libertines, but this was not possible for legal reasons. Her first album Down in Albion was released in November 2005, her third single Fuck Forever reached number 3 on the UK singles chart. The band's tours were regularly interrupted by Doherty's conflicts with the law, such as an attack on Max Carlish who wanted to make a documentary about the Babyshambles. Doherty spent four days in Pentonville Jail until the £ 159,000 bail was raised. Two thirds of the money came from his manager, the rest from EMI .

Alone and often with the Babyshambles, Doherty continued the tradition already known by the Libertines of holding recently announced concerts, so-called "guerrilla gigs", in rather small and private locations, such as on New Year's Eve 2005 in his London apartment, or at the end of March 2006 (together with General Santana) in the non- stop cinema (event location and porn cinema) at Graz Central Station in Austria . On these occasions he presented some solo works under the title Pete Doherty's Solo Album . The performances in both NonStop advertised movie theater presentation of the suggestion of the friend of the owner of the Doherty cinemas, Bettina Aichbauer, the resulting film spew It Out Your Soul (Doherty, Mick Jones ), however, was omitted. The day after the concerts in Graz, Doherty performed at the Vienna Club Flex , where Adam Green joined him.

In May 2006, the Cologne Public Prosecutor charged Doherty with drug use on public streets. In the same year he stood before a court in his home country and confessed to five cases of drug possession . He was released on bail on condition that he spend every night at The Priory addiction clinic in London . He was also prohibited from leaving the country until the trial was over. After another crash in mid-November 2006, Doherty was arrested while walking in a serpentine manner, in possession of crack , ketamine and cannabis . He was now finally threatened with jail time for repeatedly violating bail conditions. His tour of Germany was canceled at short notice.

In July 2007 there was an argument between him and his life partner Kate Moss . She threw him out of the shared apartment, which is why Doherty lived in a trailer during this time, according to the Daily Mirror . According to Moss, it wasn't about an alleged affair, but about Doherty's suicidal fantasies, which he confided to her after she discovered his will .

On August 7, 2007, Doherty was given a final reprieve in court until September 4, 2007; he would have to show his determination to fight his drug addiction, otherwise he could face prison terms for repeated drug possession. He was arrested again on August 21 on suspicion of drug possession, but the police had to release him the following day because of a formal error. From the end of August he was in the Cloud's House clinic in Salisbury in the south of England to treat his polytoxic drug addiction , thereby fulfilling the requirements of August 7, 2007.

On October 1, 2007, Shotter's Nation , the Babyshambles' second album, was released. The first single delivery was released on September 17th, the associated video was broadcast for the first time on August 17th.

Peter Doherty (2007)

After a six-week stay in a rehab clinic, Doherty actually appeared to be “clean” and communicated through the media that he could not make any promises, but that he definitely wanted to try to stop using drugs. However, the English magazine The Sun found videos of Doherty (allegedly dated November 2, 2007) showing him again injecting heroin. Doherty was instructed again - his spokesman apologized on behalf of Doherty for this "stupid, stupid action".

In April and May 2008, Doherty finally served 29 days of what was actually a 14-week prison term for illicit drug possession.

On March 13, 2009 his solo album Grace / Wastelands was released , which was released under his maiden name Peter Doherty.

In November 2009 Doherty caused a scandal during a concert organized by Bayerischer Rundfunk : He sang - presumably intoxicated - the first verse of the Deutschlandlied and was booed by the audience for it. Since the indignant audience did not calm down, the concert and the live broadcast on the radio were canceled a short time later.

In August 2010 Doherty celebrated a reunion with his longtime band The Libertines and on December 1st presented his jewelry collection Albion Trinketry , which was created in collaboration with the former Cartier designer Hannah Martin.

On the night of Shrove Tuesday, March 8, 2011, Doherty went on a pub crawl in Regensburg with August Diehl and a stranger , where he was filming the film Confession . One or more of the three people broke the window of a record and CD shop in the old town and stole a guitar and a record from the decoration. Doherty cited gaps in memory because he was very drunk and later admitted his involvement in the burglary in an interview, but denied being the thief ("I was there, but I wasn't."). If the police initially assumed a burglary, in the meantime they have come to the conclusion that those involved were intoxicated and incapable of guilt at the time of the crime. The Regensburg public prosecutor applied for a penalty warrant against Doherty and Diehl for "negligent intoxication".

In September 2013, Sequel to the Prequel , the third album by Babyshambles, was released.

Doherty moved to Hamburg in 2014 to record new songs there.

After Doherty had visited a rehab clinic in Chon Buri , he recorded with The Libertines their third album in the Thai Karma Sound Studios. The lyrics are from him and Barât. The album was released in September 2015 under the title Anthems For Doomed Youth on EMI .
