Carl Ashley Raphael Barât (born June 6, 1978 in Basingstoke ) is a British musician. He was the guitarist and singer of the rock band Dirty Pretty Things and, alongside Pete Doherty, is the front man of the band The Libertines .

youth

Barât spent part of his childhood in a commune in Somerset, where his peace movement mother lived, the other part with his father. After his parents separated, his father, a factory worker, later married Barât's current stepmother Carole. Barâts sister Lucie is an actress and singer in the band The Fay Wrays .

The Libertines

In 1996 Barât met Pete Doherty because he and his sister Amy-Jo were studying acting at Uxbridge University. Soon afterwards they founded the band The Libertines , whose first album Up the Bracket was released in 2002. Just a year later there were profound conflicts between the musicians. Doherty had broken into Barât's apartment and stolen valuables to pay for his drug addiction. Barât kicked Doherty out of the band in 2003. However, after Doherty served his sentence, he was re-admitted to the band. Nevertheless, the relationship remained extremely tense during the upcoming recordings of the second album The Libertines , and in 2004 Doherty, who could not get his drug problems under control, was again excluded from the band. At the end of 2004, Barât finally dissolved the Libertines. In 2010 there was a reunion of the band. In September 2015 the third studio album of the Libertines, Anthem For Doomed Youth , was released, the lyrics of which were written by Doherty and Barât.

Dirty Pretty Things

In 2005 Carl Barât formed a new band, the Dirty Pretty Things, together with some former members of the Libertines (Gary Powell, Anthony Rossomando), as well as with Didz Hammond from The Cooper Temple Clause .

They played their first shows in Italy and Paris in October 2005 before recording their debut album in Los Angeles, California in November 2005. It was produced by Dave Sardy, who had previously worked with Supergrass , Jet , Marilyn Manson , The Rolling Stones and Oasis . The album, called Waterloo to Anywhere , was released on May 8, 2006. The first single, "Bang Bang You're Dead", was released on April 24, 2006. The second album, Romance at Short Notice , was released in June 2008 . Shortly afterwards, the band split up to find new musical ways.

Solo career

After his time with The Libertines and the Dirty Pretty Things, Barât devoted himself increasingly to his solo career. In 2010 The Libertines gave concerts in advance of the festivals in Leeds and Reading , which they themselves portrayed as a comeback. Barât released his first solo album with his name as the title on October 4th, 2010. In 2015, album number two, Let It Reign, followed with his new backing band The Jackals .
