The Only Ones

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Only Ones is an influential English punk / new wave music group from the second half of the 1970s around the singer and composer Peter Perrett, who is responsible for both the music and the lyrics of the pieces. The band was disbanded in 1981, in 2007 there was a reunion with the original line-up with some live performances.

occupation

  • Peter Albert Neil Perrett (vocals, guitar)
  • John M. Perry (guitar and keyboard)
  • Alan Mair (bass)
  • Mike Kelie (drums)

Band history

The group was founded in 1976 by Peter Perrett and has released three albums during its existence. The most famous hits were Another Girl - Another Planet and The Beast (both included on the debut album). In 1981 the group broke up again during a US tour. Peter Perrett then withdrew from the public and from the music business until the 1990s . It was not until 1991 that he spoke exclusively about the background to the events of 1981 in an interview on the video Faster than lightning .

Even after the group broke up, numerous albums with concert recordings and archive material were released. In 2006, the group's debut album from 1978 was regularly listed with the original record company ( CBS / SonyBMG). The record was released in 2007 in 180g vinyl "Pure Pleasure" re-mastered version.

In 2006 the song Another Girl, Another Planet was used as part of an advertising campaign for the Vodafone company . On the occasion of the attention this generated, The Only Ones re- formed themselves with the original line-up and, to the astonishment of the public, gave several concerts in Great Britain in 2007.

A DVD entitled Live at Shepherds Bush Empire was released on March 22, 2008.

music

Although mostly assigned to the area of punk / new wave, neither the music nor the habitus clearly allows the group to be pressed into a template. The pieces are well composed, melodious and, with the addition of further instruments and background vocals, are partly expanded like pop songs . The texts are self-ironic with a tendency towards melancholy, nihilism and, last but not least, indications of drug use, in keeping with the zeitgeist.

meaning

From the beginning, the group was considered one of the most important bands of the New Wave era, especially in terms of music criticism, due to its forward-looking musical qualities. Later groups in the independent / alternative scene repeatedly referred to The Only Ones or covered their pieces (e.g. The Replacements , Nirvana , The Libertines , Family 5 or Blink-182 ).
