Siphonogamy

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Under Siphonogamie or pollen tube fertilization refers to the reproduction of seed plants that in the fertilization usually unbegeißelte sperm cells through a pollen tube to the ovum are brought and released there. In evolutionary terms, fertilization was originally carried out by flagellated spermatozoids, as can still be found today in ferns and mosses . In the cycads and ginkgo an intermediate stage has been preserved, as they form pollen tubes, but these release flagellated spermatozoids.
