action

Billy Fisher lives in Yorkshire with his parents and grandmother. He works as a funeral home clerk and is bored. In his boredom, he dreams of his imaginary land Ambrosia , where he is a political leader and war hero. He also invents stories about his family that he wants to make more interesting. This earned him the nickname Billy Liar (Billy Liar) . When the famous comedian Danny Boon comes to town, Billy dreams of quitting his job and becoming a gag writer. His friendships with girls are also characterized by lies. He is friends with Barbara and Rita at the same time. With flimsy stories he persuades one of them to give him back the ring he gave her so that he can give it to the other and vice versa. With a friend he spies after his former girlfriend Liz, who corresponds more to his dreams as she travels a lot and lives freely.

Life with lies becomes more complicated, however, when Barbara learns at a jeweler that Billy did not give the ring to be changed as he told her. Even the famous comedian is not interested in Billy. He skips a simultaneous appointment with Barbara and Rita in a nightclub to meet with Liz, who advises him to go to London . Changing his life is easier than expected. After meeting Liz, he meets Barbara and Rita, who are fighting over the ring. He leaves the club with Liz. She seems like the only person who understands him. He can even tell her about ambrosia . They try to love each other but are bothered by his friends who make fun of him. Liz makes an appointment with Billy for the night train to London.

Billy goes home to pack his things. There he learns that his grandmother is seriously ill and has been taken to the hospital. At the hospital, he and his mother learn that their grandmother has died. In a great hurry he reached the train station in time, where Liz was waiting for him. Billy is very excited about the biggest change in his life and desperately wants to buy milk before leaving. As a result, he missed the train. Liz drives alone and has left his suitcase on the platform. Billy goes home and daydreams about Ambrosia on the way home as an army commander .

Reviews

“Satirical comedy from the early days of British director Schlesinger with Julie Christie in her first leading role. The caricature of the state of consciousness of your young hero makes you think about your own coping with reality. "
