Patrick George Walden (born October 5, 1978 in London ) was guitarist and backing vocalist for the British rock band Babyshambles until 2006 . Before joining the Babyshambles, he played in small London bands such as Fluid , The Six Cold Thousand and The White Sport . Walden has also been a studio musician and live bassist and guitarist for Whitey , James Blunt , 500 and Crave , Ed Laliq , Edward Larrikin and The Honeymoon . Since the end of 2007 he has been musically active again, among other things Walden played in the band Big Dave , but this was disbanded in 2009. In 2011 Patrick Walden founded the group bête noire , with which he is currently recording the debut album .

Career

Youth and first bands

Patrick Walden came to play music through his father, who bought him a guitar at the age of 11. Walden was immediately enthusiastic and played several hours a day. At the age of 16 he began his training in electric guitar at a music college in London. There he met many of his later friends and bandmates, and with them he founded his first band . After completing his training, he founded the group The Six Cold Thousand (later renamed The Rebecas ) with Robert Mannall, with whom he has played in the band bête noire since 2011 . Walden left the band and now played electric bass with Five Hundred and Crave . Patrick Walden has been working as a studio musician since the end of his college education to make a living. In 2002 he joined The White Sport , where Patrick Walden played electric guitar and electric bass (electric bass only for studio recordings ). During this time he met Adam Ficek , who played drums at The White Sport . His first release with The White Sport was the single Back on in 2003. With the band opening up for The Libertines , Walden quickly made friends with Peter Doherty . In 2004 The White Sport recorded the album Songs the Postman can whistle , but this was not released until 2 years later. In spring 2004 the band split up shortly after the first album was recorded.

Babyshambles

In the summer of 2004, Peter Doherty was finally excluded from the Libertines due to his drug addiction, after which Doherty devoted himself to the band Babyshambles he founded . Patrick Walden, who had been friends with Doherty for a long time, now became the band's guitarist, but the composition of the Babyshambles underwent several changes until late summer 2004 (Peter Doherty vocals, Patrick Walden guitar, Drew McConnell bass, Gemma Clarke drums). Together with Doherty, Walden wrote many of the young band's songs, e.g. B. "The Man Who Came To Stay," which was released as the b-side of the single Killamangiro . Other Doherty / Walden compositions are "Fuck Forever", "Loyalty Song", "In Love With a Feeling", "Up the Morning", "Pipe Down", "32nd of December" and "8 Dead Boys". So Walden was involved in 7 of 16 songs on the debut album Down in Albion .

Walden's unusual way of playing set the Babyshambles apart from many other bands on the East London music scene.

In December 2005, Walden left Babyshambles , his reason for leaving the band was serious drug abuse . At first he was not replaced by another guitarist. In the January 10, 2006 issue of NME, Patrick Walden's departure from the band was officially announced. But on January 23, 2006, Walden played a concert with the Babyshambles at Junction in Cambridge . He played several more concerts on this tour, but after that he did not appear with the band until 2009.

In April 2006 the Babyshambles went on tour without Walden, who was accused of attacking his girlfriend at the time. He was arrested and spent nine days in Pentonville Prison . All charges against Walden were eventually dropped. He left London to get off heroin and Mick Whitnall became the new Babyshambles guitarist. Walden was supposed to play with the Babyshambles on their November / December Arena tour. The band released a statement that he dropped out at the last minute after traveling with them on the tour bus. Walden later stated that he hadn't appeared on stage because there were drugs on the tour bus, even though they were supposed to play a drug-free tour. Walden also stated that his successor, Mick Whitnall , doesn't want him to perform with the band.

After the babyshambles

There were rumors that Walden was playing at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival with Seb Rochford's band Fulborn Teversham , but the concert was canceled.

On June 30, 2007 he appeared on stage in London for the first time since leaving Babyshambles.

Walden appeared on the " Rock Against Racism 30th Anniversary Show" at the Hackney Empire on July 19, 2007. He played some Babyshambles classics with his old bandmate Drew McConnell .

On August 3, 2007, Walden played a small gig at the Hackney Empire with all of his former bandmates of the Babyshambles (including Mick Whitnall ), the occasion being the birthday of Peter Wolfe .

In May 2009 Patrick Walden organized a workshop for young guitarists as part of the youth project "EC1" in the London borough of Islington . The necessary equipment, an electric guitar , three guitar amps , two basses , a speaker , a melodica and harmonica , was in 2005 "to be" during a concert in the " Duke of Clarence " Pub confiscated by the Babyshambles was only some of the instruments were reclaimed and the rest donated to the project. At that time, Walden himself agreed to organize a workshop in the near future in order to receive his Fender Jazzmaster back in return . According to his own statements, he is very happy to be involved in this project, it is also a very positive environment and he is looking forward to working with the young people .

Patrick Walden played with the Babyshambles on May 15, 2009 at the "Rhythm Factory" and on November 6, 2009 at "The Halo" in Battersea , some songs, including "Fuck Forever", "Pipedown", "Black Boy Lane" and "À rebors".

In October 2010 Walden's former bandmate Adam Ficek wrote on his blog that he wanted to write some new songs with him and that Ficek had already sent him draft songs for which Walden was supposed to play the guitar.

On January 26, 2011, Adam Ficek and Patrick Walden published a joint webcast on the Internet platform BlogTV . On the same day, Walden signed up on various social networks (including Twitter , Facebook and BlogTV) to communicate with fans and to announce that he will be making some appearances soon.

According to Ficek's blog, Patrick Walden and Adam Ficek are expected to play some appearances together in France in May 2011 .

Big Dave

At the end of 2007 Walden founded the band Big Dave with drummer Seb Rochford and bassist Ruth Goller . In the first half of 2008 to spring 2009 the band played a few smaller concerts. Walden announced plans to record a debut EP later in 2008. However, Big Dave hasn't released a recording yet, you can only listen to some of the tracks on the band's official Myspace page . Big Dave has not been heard from since mid-2009 .

bete noire

On April 21, 2011 Patrick Walden and Robert Mannall published a first demo recording on the Internet platform Soundcloud with the title Runaway . Since then, more demos have appeared. Walden also announced on Facebook that he has already recorded a few tracks for Adam Ficek's new album and will be giving a few concerts in September. From the collaboration with Mannall, the band bête noire was formed , which consists of Patrick Walden ( lead guitar , vocals), Robert Mannall (guitar, vocals), Ruth Goller (bass, backing vocals ) and Jamie Morrison (drums). On October 8, 2011, bête noire's debut concert took place.

Drug addiction

Patrick Walden began using drugs after joining Babyshambles in late summer 2004. At first it was only occasional use, but it soon developed into a heavy heroin addiction . In a 2008 interview with the NME , he mentioned that, like Doherty, he was addicted to crack . In order to be able to procure heroin and crack, Walden borrowed money from many shady people , which led to him going into enormous debt. For fear of being beaten up by his creditors or their debt collectors , in autumn 2005 he no longer dared to leave the house unaccompanied.

In April 2006 Walden left Babyshambles and London to get " clean ". On May 8, 2007, a message appeared on the official Libertines Forum that he had not been using heroin for six months and was about to stop taking methadone .

On August 6, 2010, Patrick Walden had to answer in court for stolen goods and possession of a heroin-methadone mixture. Walden was arrested after a security guard in the London borough of Sutton (where Walden currently resides) observed his "suspicious" behavior on January 9th and notified the police. When the police arrived at the scene, Walden tried to escape into an alley. He was arrested in possession of a gym bag containing DVDs , Blu-ray discs and a satellite receiver valued at around £ 200 . He also carried two containers of the drug methadone with him, but they were not prescribed for him but for someone else. On August 9, 2010, Walden had to answer for possession of 21 tablets of the drug diazepam .

After these two hearings , Walden was found guilty on all charges. According to the ruling of the court , he has to fulfill certain conditions twice for six months , which means that he must not relapse within that time frame. In April 2011 Patrick Walden successfully completed another withdrawal and wants to stay "clean". He also stopped consuming large amounts of alcohol . Walden has also reduced his weight, which has increased sharply after stopping heroin and taking various medications . According to his own statements, he no longer wanted to be "fat and drunk", but wanted to lead a "normal life" again and make music.

Influences and style

Walden often cites experimental guitarists like J Mascis , Thurston Moore, and Jimi Hendrix as early influences. From this he developed his own style over the course of time, which is composed of elements from different musical styles, such as grunge , indie rock , blues or jazz .

During the beginning of his career he played in small London bands and his style fluctuated between jazz and indie rock. When Walden became guitarist for the Babyshambles , many critics described his way of playing the guitar as "chaotic" and "extraordinary", this playing style and the special sound of his Fender Jazzmaster helped set the Babyshambles apart from the many other Eastern Europeans. Differentiated London bands.

With his new band Big Dave and the influences of the two other band members, Ruth Goller and Seb Rochford, who previously played mainly in jazz bands, Patrick Walden describes the "Big Dave Sound" in an interview with the NME as being melodic and heavy Elements from Sonic Youth , Oasis , The Mars Volta and Nirvana are taken up.

Discography

Others

Patrick Walden named his dog, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier , after his idol Jimi Hendrix .

In the recording of the song Merry Go Round , from the album Down in Albion , shortly before the end of the song you can hear that the guitar stops, Peter Doherty the line "I've been so good to that boy. Why did he steal all my lighters? " (in German "I was so good to this boy. Why did he steal all my lighters?") improvised and an object falls over. These noises, especially the improvisation , are due to the fact that Walden and Doherty stole each other's lighters and Doherty gets up from his chair during the recording to look for a lighter, but at first doesn't find one; When he has found one and wants to sit down again, his chair, which was placed right next to the microphone, collapses.

After a Babyshambles concert , Peter Doherty wrote Patrick Walden Pipe Down and Walden Doherty Up The Morning on his arm, and later a tattoo artist came into the band's locker room and tattooed the respective lettering on both of them. Pipe Down and Up The Morning are songs that Doherty and Walden wrote together. The songs can be found on the album Down in Albion .
