Duke of Clarence

Duke of Clarence was a hereditary British title of nobility bestowed three times, 1362, 1412 and 1461, in the Peerage of England . In 1789 the title Duke of Clarence and St. Andrews was awarded in the Peerage of Great Britain and in 1890 in the Peerage of the United Kingdom the title Duke of Clarence and Avondale .

The name Clarence is derived from Glarentza in the Principality of Achaia ; a great aunt of the first duke, Mathilde von Hennegau , was princess there until 1318.

All five awards were made to younger sons of the English or British royal family. None of the Dukes succeeded in inheriting the title - the Duke third award because he was stripped of his title in 1478 for high treason, all the rest for lack of legitimate male descendants, or with the Duke of Clarence and St. Andrews because his titles were merged in 1830 went out with the crown.
