Seán Ó hUiginn

Seán Ó hUiginn (* in County Mayo ) is a former Irish diplomat . As such, he campaigned for the solution of the Northern Ireland conflict.

Seán Ó hUiginn attended St. Jarlath's College in Tuam and studied at University College, Galway and the University of Bordeaux .

From 1969 he began to work in the diplomatic service of the Irish Foreign Office . He worked at the Irish Embassy in Bern and later also at the Irish Embassy in Copenhagen . During his further career he was Consul General in New York City , Ambassador to Saudi Arabia , and from 1997 to 2002 Ambassador to the United States with simultaneous accreditation in Mexico . From 2002 to 2006 Ó hUiginn was ambassador to Germany . His next ambassadorial post took him to Rome , where he stayed until his retirement in 2009.

Ó hUiginn holds several honorary doctorates from various US universities. He was awarded the Order of the Stella della Solidarietà Italiana by the Italian government . On June 25, 2010 he was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Laws by the National University of Ireland, Galway .
