Babyshambles ( English from baby , small / baby and shambles , slaughter or chaos, and not as often mistakenly assumed from to shamble , sway, waddle) is the second band of Peter Doherty , the singer and guitarist of the English indie rock - Band The Libertines .

Band history

Pete Doherty formed the band in August 2004 as a counter-group to the Libertines , when the other members had temporarily thrown him out of the band because of his ongoing drug problems. Doherty had to give up his original plan to also call the band The Libertines due to legal problems. The side project Babyshambles already existed in 2003 and so the first single ( Babyshambles ) was released in May 2004 , before the Libertines' second studio album was released on August 30th.

In addition to Doherty, drummer Danny Goffey (since 2010 for Adam Ficek ), guitarist Mick Whitnall and bassist Drew McConnell are members of the Babyshambles. Ficek, born in Bletchley , joined the band in 2005 and replaced Gemma Clarke, who left Babyshambles in January 2005. He used to play with the band The White Sport and released remixes as a DJ under the pseudonym "Mains Ignition", including an album. Drew McConnell comes from Dublin and previously played with the band Elviss and is currently also with a band called The Phoenix Drive.

In September and October 2004 the band toured clubs in the UK . All performances were sold out quickly. In December 2004, the band's second single - Killamangiro - reached # 8 on the UK charts .

Apart from the singles, Babyshambles have so far published most of their works on the Internet. Since February 2005 the band has been in the studio recording songs for the first album Down in Albion , which was released in the UK on November 14, 2005. On November 28, the single Albion was released, which like Killamangiro rose to number 8 in the British charts. The single with the song Fuck Forever , which was released in August and became the final song at most Babyshambles appearances, even reached number 4 in the British single charts.

After a few gigs on the British Isles had been canceled at short notice, the planned European tour was canceled at the beginning of November 2005, with the exception of a single concert in Graz ( Austria ), according to rumors due to a change in management of the band. The concert in Graz was played without him because of Pete Doherty's arrest in London . To compensate the disappointed Austrian fans, two Pete Doherty solo concerts were organized at short notice at the beginning of April 2006, with the non-stop cinema (event location and porn cinema) in Graz again acting as the organizer. These concerts, his first on the European continent, actually took place to everyone's surprise. Pete Doherty presented the film "Spew it out your soul" during his appearances, which he had produced for the occasion at the suggestion of Bettina Aichbauer, owner of the NonStop cinema and friend of Doherty. As if that weren't enough, on the day before Pete Dohertys returned to England, Bettina Aichbauer organized a spontaneous concert at Flex in Vienna , at which the Babyshambles frontman was supported by Adam Green, who was also a guest in Vienna .

On Wednesday, May 10, 2006, his tour of Germany was to begin in Cologne's "E-Werk". But even this concert had to be canceled despite the full power plant because Pete Doherty had missed two flights to Cologne, according to the organizer. On May 13, 2006, the concert was rescheduled, however, as compensation, the band members appeared in women's clothes.

The same thing happened in 2008 at the Frequency Festival at the Salzburgring . According to the organizer, Pete Doherty missed two flights and therefore Babyshambles could not make their planned appearance at the festival. There was no substitute, but Kaizers Orchestra and Dropkick Murphys played longer concerts.

In May 2006, the Rough Trade label announced that the record deal with the Babyshambles had expired after the album Down was released in Albion . Rumors about a termination of the contract because of Doherty's drug problems are untrue and Rough Trade is interested in an extension of the contract if the band is interested in it.

At the beginning of June 2006, the lead singer went to a rehab clinic in Portugal . The second tour of Germany, originally planned for the period between October 29th and November 2nd, 2006, was canceled, allegedly because Pete Doherty had lost his passport , and should be rescheduled from November 19th to 22nd, 2006. However, this tour was also postponed to January 2007. In December the band's management announced that "Pete is currently unable to confirm concert dates in Germany" and also canceled the January dates.

Almost a year after the album Down was released in Albion , The Blinding EP with five songs was released on December 4, 2006 .

The second album by Babyshambles was released on October 1, 2007 under the name Shotter's Nation . The album was produced by Stephen Street , who among other things also co-produced Viva Hate by Morrissey . As a result, Babyshambles played another European tour in January and February 2008. After that, the band initially calmed down again. Doherty released his debut album Grace / Wastelands in March 2009 with the help of his Babyshambles colleagues . Drummer Adam Ficek also worked on his solo career (Roses Kings Castles) and released an album and EP in 2008 and 2009. Drew McConnell also supports and works on several side projects.

In December 2009 it was announced that the band will release their third album in the spring of next year, but this promise has not been kept despite a number of new songs, some of which they have already played on gigs. At the beginning of June 2010 Adam Ficek left Babyshambles in order to be able to concentrate more on his solo project. He was succeeded by Danny Goffey from the previously disbanded band Supergrass . The third studio album Sequel to the Prequel was released in September 2013. It received consistently good reviews. The Musikexpress described it as "a lucky bag made up of the most diverse styles and arrangements, which, under Doherty's catalysis, can only merge into this homogeneous work of pop art."
