New York schoolteacher Jake Singer suffers from having previously had a relationship with a woman who married another man. He meets the widow Allegra Marshall, who has not yet come to terms with the death of her husband.

Singer and Marshall fall in love even though psychoanalyst Dr. Ernesto Morales Singer warns to start a new relationship.
