The Fender Mustang is an electric guitar model (with solid body english : Solid Body ), which since 1964 by the American musical instrument manufacturer Fender is built.

history

To close the gap between the entry-level guitars and the more expensive models, the Fender Mustang was introduced in 1964 . It has the same body as the Duo-Sonic , as well as the two electromagnetic pickups in single coil design ( single coil ) . New to the Mustang were an improved electrical circuit and a redesigned vibrato system similar to that of the Fender Jaguar and Fender Jazzmaster . Production was initially stopped in 1981; Fender Japan has been producing a new edition of the Fender Mustang since 1986. Copies were also offered by a Japanese manufacturer under the brand name Fresher .

Along with the Fender Mustang Bass introduced in 1966, the Mustang is one of the last instruments to be co-developed by the company's founder, Leo Fender . After the sale of the Fender company to the media group CBS in October 1964, Leo Fender retired in the course of 1965.

construction

The Mustang follows as already the electric guitar models Fender Telecaster and the Stratocaster the fundamental design principle of the Fender company: At a massive body is a neck from Maple screwed. For the body, however, Fender-untypical poplar wood or (very rarely found in old models) mahogany is used. The tuning machines are in a line on the upper side of the asymmetrical headstock . The electronics are mounted on a plastic pickguard, which is located under the guitar strings on the body. The Mustang was initially offered in two versions with a short (22.5 inch / 21 fret) and a long (24 inch / 22 fret) scale length , whereby the production of the short scale necks was quickly abandoned due to poor sales. The electronics consist of two single-coil pickups that are managed via two slide switches and one volume and tone control each. With the two switches, each with three switching options, a total of four different sounds can be called up with the Mustang.

The mustang in music

Although the Mustang was originally intended by Fender as a "students model" , there are quite a few well-known guitarists who own this instrument and use it on stage. Mention should be made of Walter Becker from Steely Dan , Shakira , Johnny Winter as well as David Byrne , John Frusciante , Todd Rundgren , Graham Coxon , PJ Harvey , Patti Smith and Adrian Belew .

Jimi Hendrix used a red Mustang when recording the second record of the Jimi Hendrix Experience , entitled Axis: Bold as Love . The guitar was auctioned for $ 400,000 in 2007.

One of the most famous Mustang players was Kurt Cobain from the band Nirvana (seen in the videos for the songs Smells Like Teen Spirit and In Bloom, among others ). Cobain also used the Mustang as a template for his own signature guitar: When asked what a possible “Kurt Cobain special model” should look like, Cobain photographed his Mustang and a Fender Jaguar, cut the two photos in the middle and stuck them the top of the Jaguar to the bottom of the Mustang and presented the result with the word "So!" . Following this logic, the guitar went into production with the artificial name " Jag-Stang " ( Jag uar and Mu stang ).

Mustang amplifier

A series of guitar amplifiers from Fender is currently being produced under the name Mustang. What these models have in common is that they have a large selection of effects and amplifier emulations, which can also be edited from the computer via a USB connection and the FUSE software.
