The Telecaster Bass is an electric bass model from the US musical instrument manufacturer Fender Musical Instruments Corporation . The Telecaster Bass was first introduced in June 1968. He was Fender's first edition ( English : Reissue ) of the first Fender Precision Bass , the company's founder in 1951 Leo Fender had been developed.

History and construction of the instrument

The Telecaster Bass is a slightly further developed new edition of the first electric bass model from Fender, the Precision Bass, which was released in 1951. The name of the Telecaster Bass is based on one of the most popular electric guitar models from Fender, the Fender Telecaster introduced in 1950 . Together with this, the Telecaster Bass has a board-shaped, flat body without ergonomic cutouts, like the first version of the Precision Bass from 1951. Just like the Telecaster electric guitar model, the bass was also offered for a short time in a colorfully patterned pink or blue paisley body finish, which was intended to appeal to guitarists of the music styles described as psychedelic in particular at the end of the 1960s . These instruments are coveted collector's items today.

From February 1972, Fender produced the Telecaster Bass with a neck attached to the body with three screws , instead of the four-fold screw connection common with the Precision Bass. Later was electromagnetic pickup in single coil design ( single coil ) of the model by a double coil in construction ( humbucker ) replaced, which was mounted directly on the base of the neck in the corpus. This pickup produced an extremely bass-heavy, poorly contoured tone that found little support outside of country music . One of the few musicians of other styles was Kenny Gradney, bassist for the band Little Feat , who improved the sound by adding a second humbucker near the bridge. The popularity of this model suffered from an instrument neck with a bulky cross-section and from the high weight resulting from the use of ash wood for the body, which was rarely less than five kilograms. From 1977 the Telecaster Bass received a bridge in the style of the Precision Bass with four saddles. In this model of the web, the lower ends of the bass could strings of the instrument ceiling forth are suspended ( "top") into the web (English: Top-loaded ) instead passed as before from the rear of the body by these to be (English: String-through-body ). Production of the Fender Telecaster Bass ceased in September 1979.

The Telecaster Bass in the second version with humbucker in neck position was reissued by the Fender subsidiary Squier in 2007 under the name Squier Vintage Modified Precision Bass TB . In contrast to the Telecaster design, this model has an ergonomically inclined body ("forearm support") like the Precision Bass model, which was manufactured from 1955. The body of this model is made of lime wood with an ash veneer .

The Squier Classic Vibe '50s Precision Bass , released in 2008, has great similarities with the first version of the Telecaster Bass (1968-71) . However, this model also has the forearm support of the later Precision Bass (from 1955), and the body is made of linden wood .

In 2011 Fender brought out a new edition of the humbucker-equipped Telecaster Bass as part of its inexpensive modern player series made in China , which however has a second humbucker near the bridge for a more contemporary, contoured tone.
