Fender Toronado

Fender Toronado

The Fender Toronado is an electric guitar model that reflects an attempt by the American musical instrument manufacturer Fender to also satisfy those guitarists who prefer the sound of electric guitars with two double- coil pickups in humbucking design and with a mahogany body. The Toronado is the first independent development by Fender-Mexico, which makes cheaper Fender guitars.

The Fender Toronado came on the market around 1998 and is usually equipped with two Fender Atomic humbuckers , but in the GT series with two pickups from the manufacturer Seymour Duncan , others with two Black Dove pickups (similar to the one from competitor Gibson 1948 introduced single- coil cartridge model P-90 ). The body , based on the Fender Jazzmaster , is made of mahogany, the fingerboard is made of rosewood , although some models have a body made of alder or poplar wood instead .

As with almost every Fender guitar, the neck made of maple wood is screwed to the body and has a Gibson-like scale length , also to offer lovers of Gibson guitar models an inexpensive alternative to Gibson in terms of sound and playability that is not available from the Gibson Subsidiary company Epiphone comes from. The earlier Toronado models have a fixed hardtail bridge with the strings running through the body and a pickguard based on the Jazzmaster. Newer models, on the other hand, have a classic stop-tail bridge, as can also be seen on Gibson models, and a small pickguard, as is also used in the American-made Fender model Strat-o-Sonic . Both versions have a three-way switch and a tone and volume control for each of the two pickups.

Usually made in Mexico, the Toronado was incorporated into the Highway-1 series, but with two instead of four controls. The Toronado has since been removed from the Fender range.

sound

The sound of the Fender Toronado is clearly based on the Gibson guitars, but is quite independent. With a humbucker in the neck position, there is hardly a series fender that produces a similar tone.

The Fender Toronado in music

There aren't many prominent guitarists who play a toronado, but there are some like the guitarist of the band Briertone and former member of the Red Hot Chili Peppers John Frusciante , seen in the video for the piece Can't Stop . Rock guitarist Ross Feratu of The Spook also regularly uses a Fender Toronado. The Toronado has accompanied him on all albums, in videos and on various European tours. In addition, the guitarist of blink-182 , Tom DeLonge , used a modified Toronado as a studio guitar, and Brian Molko , guitarist and singer of the band Placebo, played on a Toronado at the German rock music festival Rock am Ring in 2009 .
