The Airplane Flies High

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Airplane Flies High is a five-piece box set released in 1996 by the American alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins . It contains the extended versions of the five singles from the double album album Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness as well as a 44-page booklet with images and written recordings by Billy Corgan as well as the lyrics of the pieces.

As a limited edition, the box reached number 42 on the Billboard charts and sold around 300,000 copies (a total of 1.5 million records), which earned the release platinum status. Originally, the publication was limited to 200,000 copies. Due to overwhelming and unexpected demand, Virgin Records produced more after the original run demand sold out. The album was remastered in 2013 under the supervision of frontman Billy Corgan and then reissued on vinyl and as a CD / DVD box.

The full versions of "Feelium", "Knuckles", "New Waver", "Zoom", "Phang", "Blast" and "Speed" were released on the 2012 release of Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness .

"Milieu", "Jackboot", "Rings", "The Groover" and "Star Song" appeared in full versions on the 2013 re-release of The Airplane Flies High .

Reviews

According to Rolling Stone, The Airplane Flies High is " Anthology 1 " of the Smashing Pumpkins, a counterpart to Mellon Collie and The Infinite Sadness , which offers a glimpse into the extraordinary creative outbursts of Corgan. "Mellon Collie" was a transforming experience for the band and " Airplane " shows how ready the pumpkins are to take artistic risks. Even the practice of anthologizing this material is megalomaniac. But the ballads are as beautiful as anything Corgan has ever written.

"The box also contains small, thought-provoking pieces with a touch of guitar riffs from the corporate rock of the 70s." - Tom Moon, Rolling Stone
