Gordon James O'Connor (born May 18, 1939 in Toronto , Ontario ) is a former Brigadier General of the Canadian Armed Forces and a politician with the Conservative Party of Canada .

Life

After attending school, O'Connor first studied mathematics at Concordia University in Montreal and graduated with a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc. Mathematics). He then completed a postgraduate course in philosophy at York University in Toronto with a Bachelor of Arts (BA Philosophy). He then entered the military and rose to brigadier general in the Canadian Forces Land Force Command during his thirty years of service .

After finishing his active service, O'Connor switched to the private sector and was initially a lobbyist for BAE Systems , the world's second largest defense company , from 1996 to 2004 , and from 1996 to 2001 for General Dynamics . He was also a senior partner at the Hill & Knowlton PR agency .

In 2004, O'Connor was elected as a candidate for the Conservative Party of Canada for the first time to the House of Commons and initially represented the constituency of Carleton / Lanark . In the general election on January 23, 2006 , he was finally re-elected to the House of Commons for the Carleton / Mississippi Mills constituency.

Immediately after the election, on February 6, 2006, Prime Minister Stephen Harper appointed O'Connor to his cabinet as Minister of National Defense . In a government reshuffle on August 14, 2007, he was replaced by Peter MacKay in this office, whereupon he took over the office of Minister for National Income, which he held until October 29, 2008. Since then, he is Minister of State and Parliamentary Secretary ( Chief Government Whip ) of the government faction in the lower house.
