history

In 1925, an association of financial analysts formed the Investment Analyst Society of Chicago . Similar organizations were also founded elsewhere, such as the New York Society of Security Analysts (NYSSA) in 1937. In 1947 the individual associations merged to form an umbrella organization, the National Federation of Financial Analysts Societies (NFFAS) . Newly founded associations also joined the national association.

In 1959, the member associations voted to found the Institute of Chartered Financial Analysts (ICFA) to award the CFA title. ICFA offered the first CFA exam in 1963 and began with the still existing format of three exams in 1964. The NFFAS, which later became the Financial Analyst Federation (FAF), remained as the umbrella organization for the individual member associations.

After ICFA and NFFAS had existed separately for many years, the two associations decided in 1990 to merge to form the Association for Investment Management and Research (AIMR) . In 1999 the merger was completed. In 2004, AIMR decided to change its name to CFA Institute to reflect its association with the ethical guidelines of the CFA Charter .

Today the CFA Institute has more than 110,000 members worldwide, almost 90% of whom are CFA titleholders. There are 138 associations in 60 countries.
