Henry Mintzberg , OC , OQ , FRSC (born September 2, 1939 in Canada ) is a Canadian professor of business administration and management .

Life

After training in mechanical engineering ( B. Eng., Industrial Engineering ) at McGill University ( Montreal ) in 1961, Mintzberg worked for Canadian National Railways (1961–1963). He studied part-time and in 1962 made another Bachelor in General Arts ( Sir George Williams University ). Mintzberg received his Master of Science in 1965 at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Management. He completed his doctoral studies at the MIT Sloan School of Management and presented his doctoral thesis The Manager at Work - Determining his Activities, Roles and Programs by Structured Observation in 1968.

Mintzberg took over a professorship at McGill University and continued to teach there with interruptions. Mintzberg held professorships and visiting professorships at INSEAD (visiting professor, 1991–1999), the London Business School (1990–1991), the École des hautes études commerciales (Montreal, 1977–1978), Carnegie Mellon University (1973). 1974–1976 he held a visiting professorship at the University of Aix-Marseille . It was here that his most important work, Structuring of organizations: A synthesis of research, was created . Mintzberg was the first director of the joint doctoral program of the four Montreal universities (1976–1978).

Henry Mintzberg is married and has two daughters.

Work

Mintzberg has authored more than 140 articles and ten books on management and strategy. According to his own statements, his goal was to present a teachable subject “Management Policy” . While pursuing this goal, Mintzberg has written significant papers in the fields of strategy, organizational theory and general management.

His work on organizational structures ( Structuring of organizations: A synthesis of research ), together with a work by his student and colleague Danny Miller, is considered to be one of the most cited publications on the subject (see Mintzberg's configuration ). In The Rise and Fall of Strategic Planning , he criticizes planning departments and methods as unsuitable because they focus on the content of strategy instead of explaining how strategy is created. The book is a standard work in strategy theory .

In addition to his work on the subject of management training, Mintzberg also publishes a criticism of the teaching system at universities, where he vehemently speaks out against the typical full-time MBA programs ( Managers Not MBAs ). Just as openly, he speaks out against certain business practices of airlines and airports ( Why I hate flying ).

Awards

Mintzberg was given frequent and high honors. For his services to education in Canada, he was named Officer of the Order of Canada in 1998 and Officier de l'ordre national du Québec in the same year . Mintzberg has twice won the McKinsey Award for Best Article of the Year in the Harvard Business Review (1975). He also has honorary doctorates from the Universities of Montreal , Concordia , Memorial , McMaster , Simon Fraser , The New School , Lund , Lancaster , Gent , Liège , Paris-Dauphine , Geneva , Lausanne , Venice and ESADE .
