Auenheim is the smallest district of the North Rhine-Westphalian city ​​of Bergheim . It lies in the headwaters of the Gillbach . history

Prehistory and early history

The oldest evidence of human existence comes from the younger Stone Age and goes back to 4000 BC. BC back. A hand ax from this period was found in 1984 when tilling the fields not far from Auenheim. Devices made of flint , hatchets and blades from the younger Stone Age were found during inspections and during field work in the hallways of the village.

Ash boxes and grave containers date from the time of the Romans . They were found while working for the Fortuna-Nord briquette factory . Today you are in Bedburg Castle.

With the retreat of the Romans in the 5th century, the Franks colonized the Rhineland . They settled near watercourses and built farms. Although there are no more farms from the Franconian era in Auenheim today, the structure of the settlement allows conclusions to be drawn about the earlier development. The Cistercian monks came to Auenheim around 1100 . The first evidence of the existence of two courtyards of the Kamp Abbey in Auenheim can be found in a document from the Rolandswerth monastery from 1143. The monks gradually withdrew from Auenheim over the years. In 1280 they sold one of their farms to the Order of German Knights . This court was the present day court. After purchasing the present order courtyard, they expanded Auenheim and built a new church of St. Medardus . Over the years, however, the star of the German Knight Order in Auenheim sank again.

Modern times

With the invasion of the French, the influence of the abbeys and orders ended. Auenheim was added to the Mairie Bedburg. Even under the rule of the Prussians , Auenheim continued to belong to the city of Bedburg .

With the beginning of mining in the Rhenish lignite district , Auenheim became larger. Lignite mines were now opening up everywhere. With the beginning of the Second World War , the construction of the Fortuna-Nord briquette factory between Niederaussem and Auenheim began. In the 1950s, the Fortuna-Garsdorf opencast mine was opened, and finally, at the beginning of the 1960s, the Niederaussem power station was built.

Due to the local reorganization, the Cologne Law , Auenheim came on January 1st, 1975 as a new district to the district town of Bergheim.

Auenheim today

Auenheim is the smallest district in Bergheim. With the construction of the Rheinbraun settlement, many foreign residents came to the place who have integrated themselves well into local life. The Ordenshof mentioned in the upper part is owned by the city of Bergheim and was not least due to the efforts of the former mayor Klaus Gülden and the chairman of the Heimatfreunde von Niederaussem and Auenheim e. V., Norbert Esser, extensively renovated. Today Ordenshof is the most used community center in Bergheim. Since 2011 the Ordenshof has been run by the non-profit association "Ordenshof Auenheim" eV. Since then, the association has been taking care, among other things, of renting and maintaining the listed building and the adjoining old fire station with overnight accommodations.

The historic oven from the old bakery in Niederaussem is also located directly at the Ordenshof . For many years there was a permanently installed marquee next to the stove, which was used for numerous events.

Local mayor is the non-party Hanz-Peter Kleyn. Through the St. Florian Auenheim 1991 e. V. there was a lively village life with numerous activities for young and old. The citizens' association took part in the carnival parade in Niederaussem every year and has received several awards for its motto floats. The citizens' association dissolved in 2018, but participation in the carnival parade will continue.
