history

Rheidt is mentioned for the first time in 1109 in a document from Archbishop Friedrich I of Cologne , and Hüchelhoven about 60 years later in a document from Rainald von Dassel . The rulers of Hüchelhoven and Rheidt were various Cologne monasteries and the Kamp monastery on the Lower Rhine.

During the occupation by the French, Hüchelhoven became the main town of the Mairie of the same name and, since 1816, the mayor's office . Rheidt, Büsdorf , Fliesteden and Glessen belonged to the community of Hüchelhoven . As a result of the municipal reorganization, the places of the community of Hüchelhoven came to the city of Bergheim.

The community of Hüchelhoven was incorporated into the district town of Bergheim on January 1, 1975.

Attractions

Geretzhoven Castle

Geretzhoven Castle

Geretzhoven Castle is a former two-part moated castle from the 16th century. The trench system has been partially preserved. The manor house and farm building have grown together to form a closed four-wing complex. Today, Geretzhoven Castle hosts major music and theater events as well as special markets. The special ambience is often used for weddings and other larger celebrations.

Other historical estates and farms are the Bergerhof (possibly on the site of the former Hüchelhoven Castle ), the Baeckerhof and the three Mönchhöfe of the Kamp monastery: in the local area the Millianshof , in front of the power station the now abandoned Klein-Mönchhof and next to it the Groß-Mönchhof , now a horse farm. The formerly important Woltershof has been abandoned and converted into a residential complex.

St. Michael Church

St. Michael Rheidt-Hüchelhoven

In 1165 a church is mentioned in the double village, which had parish rights in 1261. The oldest part of today's church is the west tower, which was built in the middle of the 16th century. In 1789 a new church was built in place of the dilapidated old one. In 1928 a flat ribbed vault was installed.

Niederaussem power plant

As a result of the expansion of the Niederaussem power plant , there were protests in Rheidt-Hüchelhoven. Due to the concentration of the old cooling towers with the new 200 meter high cooling tower, there is considerable shade in the place. The duration of sunshine is significantly reduced, especially in winter. The new construction plans for further BoA power plant blocks in one and a half kilometers away are rejected by numerous residents of the town. A corresponding citizens 'initiative (BigBEN: citizens' initiative against BoA expansion Niederaussem) has been founded and has already been able to temporarily prevent the construction of a new double block by finding allies in the surrounding towns and in politics and proving that RWE has broken its word several times with regard to its assurances.

village life

A lively club life takes place in the twin town, for which the SV 1926 Rheidt eV, the Bürgererverein Eintracht Hüchelhoven 1912, the Rheidt village community, the Maifreunde, the St. Cäcilia church choir, the Carnival friends Rheidt-Hüchelhoven, the AWO and the VdK Rheidt-Hüchelhoven, the volunteer fire brigade , the Catholic women's community and the theater association Frohsinn are responsible. The village festivals take place on the village square, on courtyards, in festival tents, in the old rectory and in the multi-purpose hall at the primary school.

The 900th anniversary of Rheidt took place in 2009. For this occasion, a peace tree was planted on the park-like village square, which grows towards the future and which corresponds to a stone column from the past, which was found in Rheidt as the remains of a Roman Jupiter column from the 2nd to 3rd centuries AD has been. The column erected as a replenishment shows that Rheidt has existed for at least twice as long as the official age according to the documents indicates.

Odilia Weidenfeld Primary School Hüchelhoven

The Rheidt-Hüchelhovener athletes have a sports field and a gym. Parents can send their children to the municipal kindergarten on St. Michael Straße without having to travel far. The Odilia-Weidenfeld-Elementary School is open to school-age children.

There is a secondary school and a secondary school in Niederaussem, two kilometers away. There are high schools in Bergheim and Knechtsteden .
