history

In the midst of today's town, between the first and fourth centuries AD, a Roman vicus was found on both sides of the still dead straight Roman road Via Belgica from Cologne to Aachen , which is still called "Roman road" - today's B55 bypasses it Place. To the west of the vicus there was a burial ground, from which numerous finds have been secured. Some gravestones as well as parts of a temple of Mercury and several matron memorials were later installed in the old church and secured when it was demolished. At the western exit of the village in the area of the burial ground, another Roman road from Neuss to Zülpich ( Roman road Trier – Neuss ) crossed the Via Belgica . This vicus is possibly identical to Tibericum , which is said to be 22.5 km west of Cologne, but could also have given its name to Zieverich . On the other hand, the place name was traced back to a Roman street post ad turrem .

The first documentary mention was possibly made in 997 in a document that was issued during a rest by Emperor Otto III. was probably exhibited at Thorr (ture) castle . With this Otto der Thietburg, sister of Bishop Bernward von Hildesheim , gave a homestead in the Leinegau . But it can also mean the place Düren am Hellweg , which would fit better into the emperor's itinerary. The secured first mention is in a document from the year 1051 with a bridge Thurre over the river Arnefe . Laach Castle was built in 1141 . In 1200 Thorr already had his own chapel , on the pedestal of which is today's Roman tower , the landmark of the place. Roman altar parts in the foundation indicate an earlier sanctuary at the same or nearer location. At the same time the Torr castle was rebuilt. A forked crucifix dates from 1300 and was hung on the wall by the left side altar of the church in 1908. The Mother of God and Child dates from 1470. Around 1500 the chapel in Thorr was rebuilt, in 1670 elevated to a parish church and expanded until 1681. After an earthquake on August 26, 1878 , the building was dilapidated. Only the Roman tower remained.

In 1634 the St. Katharina Schützenbruderschaft was founded. In 1680 a new castle was built in Thorr after the old one burned down. In 1755 the Thorrer drank their first locally brewed beer, "Römer- Kölsch ", from the Römer brewery Josef Roleff, which operated until 1986.

In 1908 the new neo-Gothic church was consecrated, replacing the old, dilapidated and too small church. It is dedicated to the holy apostles Simon and Jude Thaddeus . In 1916 the church bells were melted down again for the armaments industry. The volunteer fire brigade was founded in 1925 . In 1943 the new Thorrer bells were melted down again for the arms industry, only one small bell survived the Second World War . Only since March 1959 does the church have three bells again.

As part of the municipal reorganization through the Cologne Act , Thorr, which had previously belonged to the Elsdorf Office , was incorporated into the city of Bergheim on January 1, 1975.
