Coal refining company Fortuna-Nord in the Rhenish lignite district

The coal refining company Fortuna-Nord in the Niederaussem district of Bergheim is one of the three remaining coal refining companies of RWE Power , which emerged from the formerly numerous briquette factories that founded the lignite industry . Other factories are the coal refining company Frechen in Frechen and the coal refining company Ville / Berrenrath in the industrial area of Hürth-Knapsack . Fortuna is closest to the current pits.

history

The briquette factory was founded in 1939 as one of the last in the Rhenish lignite mining area near Cologne, near the Fortuna opencast mine and the town of the same name that was developing. The first briquettes were produced in 1941. There was also a power station with the same name . Opencast mining, power station and location are now only history. Only the briquette factory on the outskirts of Niederaußem was constantly renewed and production was adapted to the requirements of the market. The 31 briquette presses were shut down in 2003 but not yet dismantled. Today, briquettes are produced exclusively in the Frechen plant. In 2007/8 RWE-Power invested 23.5 million euros in the construction of a new vertical roller mill for the production of lignite dust, which will increase the capacity of all plants by 25%. RWE is thus meeting the increased demand for coal dust due to the increased prices for the alternative fuels gas and oil.

production

Fortuna-Nord produces today (2005) from an annual 3.9 million t / a of raw coal, which is brought in via the company's own north-south railway , to 47% lignite dust , which is blown and burned in industrial firing systems over open grates. Fluidized bed coal is a lignite dust with a coarser grain size that is burned more efficiently in large-scale combustion plants and power plants using the circulating fluidized bed process. It has a share of 21%. The newest product line is lignite coke (32%), when activated coke he is also in a special grain as filter and absorber used. For coking, dried and sieved brown coal is strongly heated in two special hearth ovens . The rest of the water and volatile components escape. The hot gas is used to generate steam in waste heat boilers and, after the heat has been given off, is cleaned using an electrostatic precipitator and discharged through a chimney.

power plant

Since the raw lignite contains up to 55% water, it must first be dried with superheated steam in tube dryers . The factory itself produces this process steam in a cogeneration power plant with five boilers and four turbines ; the electricity that is not used is fed into the power grid. Additional steam can also be obtained from the Niederaußem power plant .
