The Cumberland Wildlife Park is a wildlife park in the federal state of Upper Austria , in the Salzkammergut , near Grünau in the Almtal . The Almsee and the Grünau Wildlife Park are deeply embedded between the steep cliffs on the northern edge of the Dead Mountains .
The zoo, known through the work of Konrad Lorenz, offers various animal species their natural habitat on an area of 60 ha. Threatened animal species such as wild horses can be admired. Long hiking trails lead through the park, with its 70 different animal species and a total of approx. 500 animals.
The wildlife park was founded in the 1970s by the Herzog von Cumberland Foundation , a family foundation of the Welfenhaus , which had been in exile in Austria since its dethronement in the Kingdom of Hanover in 1866 and lived at Cumberland Castle in Gmunden.
