Gerd Schuller
Gerd Schuller (born March 16, 1953 in Villach ) is an Austrian composer and musician.
Live and act
Schuller graduated from elementary school in Heiligengeist and attended the Realistic Gymnasium in Villach, which he graduated with the Matura in 1974 . During this time he already played the Hammond organ at jazz masses in the St. Nicolai Church in Villach. He studied jazz with Harald Neuwirth at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz, specializing in jazz piano. He first worked as a musician for the Schauspielhaus Graz . In 1980 he arranged the music for the German premiere of Jean-Claude Carrieres play The Conference of the Birds in a production by Rainer Hauer.
As a musician, Schuller played the piano in Wilfried Scheutz ' Wilfried's Crazy Baby Band . He can be heard on numerous sound carriers by Austrian pop musicians such as STS , Boris Bukowski and Carl Peyer . He is increasingly active in his own bands such as the fusion band Attack , Keytrio or B3 , in which he plays the Hammond organ of the same name . His stylistic repertoire ranges from rock , pop , fusion, crossover , grunge , Madchester , rap , blues , jazz , classical , experimental, musical to folk music, which he repeatedly combines. In 2009 Schuller composed the Paulus Pop Oratorio , which was premiered in Graz.
Since 1985 Schuller has been teaching keyboard and pop composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz and leads his own band formations. In 2007 Paul Hönigschnabl wrote a monograph on Gerd Schuller as part of his musicological training. He is married, has four children and lives and works in Graz and on Lake Ossiach .
Works
Schuller wrote and produced music for numerous commercials (Hornig Kaffee, Kastner & Öhler, Milde Sorte, Milka, Schärdinger and others) as well as signations for the German news channel n-tv (1998-2001), for Premiere , the ORF magazine Report and Radio Steiermark (1996 –2000) He also produced the music for the tourism advertising films Discover the Joy of Austria .
He is also the composer of the Austrian television series Kommissar Rex (ORF / SAT1). He also wrote the music for the German-language series Schlosshotel Orth (ORF / ZDF). Schuller also composed the music for SOKO Kitzbühel .
Film music
Schuller wrote music for films such as Seifenblasen (1988, directed by Alfred Ninaus), Giulia Super (1994, directed by Michael Czencig), Tödlicher Umweg (2003, directed by Curt Faudon ) and for the television films Murderous Departure ( EPO film ), Der poor wasters (2006, director: Michael Kreihsl ), Cross Town Sabbath / Zwang zur Unrast (1994/95, docu-drama based on a book by Frederic Morton, ORF, PBS, Channel 13, director: C. Faudon). Likewise, the music comes to the documentary industry at the turn of punk or the series Land of Valleys 1-10 (1989-1991, documentation ORF) and the universe of Peter M. Preissler from his pen. In collaboration with Curt Faudon , Schuller was responsible for the film music for three advertising films for Vienna Tourism from 1987 to 1992 .
Theater music
In addition to his work as a film musician, Gerd Schuller set pieces for the stage version of the fellini film La Strada - The Song of the Road in the Old Theater in Stuttgart and in 2012 the music for Tabori's play Die Goldbergvariationen in the Volkstheater Wien. In 2017 he composed the music for the new version of the Bleiberger Knappenspiel .
musical
In 2010, Schuller and his sons Gunther and Geri Schuller launched the folk musical Simon Kramer on the Finkenstein castle ruins . The texts were written by the Carinthian poets Heimo Töfferl and Adolf Ulbing.
Prizes and awards
Schuller is the winner of the Grand Prix CIFFT 2004 (world's best tourism advertising film) and the Grand Prix CIFFT 2007. In the film Mozart 2006 he arranged the music of the Genius and thus won 1st place at the US International Film & Video Festival. In 2006 he received the city of Villach's culture award “for his life's work to date” from Mayor Helmut Manzenreiter . In 2008 he was awarded the Golden Decoration of Honor of the State of Styria "for services to cultural development" (decided by the Styrian state government). In 2011 he was celebrated as Styrian of the day for Schuller's key trio and his CD Pandora .
