Wild Girls - Through Africa in high heels was a reality show that was broadcast on RTL in 2013 . The format is an in-house development by RTL. Twelve prominent candidates were exposed in the Namibian desert and lived there with various indigenous peoples, including the Himba tribe .

concept

In the show, the participants had to contest various competitions. In nomination rounds they decided jointly, but through individual votes, who had to leave the competition. The so-called desert queen received a golden high heel at the end of the season . The reality show Reality Queens on Safari , which was broadcast on Pro Sieben on August 22, 2013, was produced according to a similar concept . This is based on the Dutch reality show Echte Meisjes In De Jungle . Sara Kulka won the first season of Wild Girls - Through Africa on high heels .

Off-speaker for the show was William Cohn .

Charisma

The show was broadcast from July 10th to August 21st, 2013, the shooting took place in May 2013 in Namibia. The moderator was Andreas Jancke . Since the first episode in a broadcast at 21:15, the prime-time telecast Mamma Mia could surpass in viewership, broadcast times were exchanged for broadcasting the second series and the result at 20:15 sent. Despite being broadcast at prime time, the second episode clearly lost viewers and market share. The fourth episode was postponed in favor of broadcasting the Audi Cup . With double episodes broadcast from August 14, the series ended earlier than planned. Another season was not produced.

reception

criticism

Ute Koczy , the development policy spokeswoman for the Greens, criticized RTL in a letter for "having such a program based on cultural clichés played in Namibia of all places" against the background of the crimes in the German colonial era . RTL press spokeswoman Anke Eickmeyer pointed out the concept of Wild Girls aimed at entertainment : “What we hadn't planned was a history documentary, a portrait about Africa or the Himba or a political program about human rights violations - there are enough other formats for that in for whom these issues are better off. ”According to Christian Buß in Spiegel Online, “ with the best will in the world, RTL could not see what would be problematic in invading a protected indigenous people in order to then let loose a few trash trullas on them. ”

According to Thomas M. Blaser in süddeutsche.de , “the genre has reached a new low” with Wild Girls . Most of the female competitors are “starlets from older reality shows who try to showcase some physical advantages”. The audience should “laugh at the women who are all labeled as mindless bitches with their behavior in the Namibian desert.” In contrast to other shows, “the Namibian desert landscape and its inhabitants”, the Himba , are “an integral part of the television spectacle”. "Scantily clad women in high heels" have long been part of the European television entertainment scene, whose "open sexism " and the "denigration of women" are hardly provocative anymore. The “prominent role of the allegedly primitive Himba tribe in this permanent spectacle”, however, is “in a new dimension”. Christian Buß, who sees parallels to the “ Völkerschauen des Deutschen Kaiserreich”, said in Spiegel Online that one cannot blame the “Eurocentric arrogance [...] of the staging”: The broadcaster is more likely to care about the people threatened with extinction and by no means as "primitive as the hustle and bustle of the free-running bosom miracles from German private television breeding."

On October 14, 2013, the Himba participating in the series asked the human rights organization "Earth Peoples" to intervene on their behalf against the RTL TV Reality Show and to stop further publications, as the village was not informed in what light the residents of RTL would be shown. Since no translation was offered, they could not understand the content during filming. According to the Himba, they were promised by RTL to sensitively present their culture in the series and to inform about human rights problems in Namibia.

Odds

According to information from DWDL.de , RTL had problems with its “summer format”, so the media magazine saw the format as “failed”. Due to the bad ratings, RTL even saw itself forced to change the broadcasting slot, but without success. Anke Schäferkordt , managing director of the RTL Group, said, according to Spiegel Online , which describes the program as a “ trash show”, “alarmed about the rate development in your company”. She said in an interview with Manager Magazin : "Of course we are not satisfied with RTL's current market shares."
