John Palsgrave (* around 1480 in London , † 1554 in Northamptonshire ) was an English scholar.

Life

Palsgrave studied in Cambridge and Paris , where he acquired a thorough knowledge of French. He became the tutor of Princess Mary Tudor , sister of King Henry VIII of England , whom he accompanied to France in 1514 . Later he was the teacher of the Duke of Richmond , the king's illegitimate son, and in 1533 became director of the London School of St. Dunstan-in-the-East. In 1545 he was appointed principal of Wadenhoe in Northamptonshire, where he later died. He is known for his work "Lesclarcissement de la langue francoyse" ( French L'éclaircissement de la langue française ), which appeared in 1530 and was planned as a French grammar and dictionary. The book also provides indirect information about the English language of the 16th century .
