Zitti e buoni ( Italian for "quiet and good") is a song by the Italian rock band Måneskin from 2021. The group won the Sanremo Festival and the Eurovision Song Contest in the same year .

Emergence

The song was written a few years before the band took part in Sanremo and initially conceived as a ballad . For the studio album Teatro d'ira - Vol. I it was rewritten to a heavier rock song. The music and lyrics come from the four band members, the producer was Fabrizio Ferraguzzo .

Participation in the Sanremo Festival 2021

Måneskin's participation in the Sanremo Festival 2021 with Zitti e buoni was announced on December 17, 2020. The band presented the song for the first time on the first evening of the festival. Plagiarism allegations were quickly raised , as similarities with the piece FDT by the Italian group Anthony Laszlo from 2015 were found; the allegations could be refuted during the festival by a technical report on behalf of Sony Music.

In a combined vote from the opinion polling jury, orchestra, press jury and televoting , the song reached the finals of the best three in the Sanremo final on March 6, 2021. There Zitti e buoni was finally able to prevail with over 40% of the votes (demoscopic jury, press jury and televoting), ahead of the contributions by Francesca Michielin and Fedez (30%) and Ermal Meta (28%). As a result, the band qualified with the song for the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 .

Music and lyrics

The music is very guitar-heavy , but also uses strings (in the Sanremo live version) . Singing and chanting alternate.

The text of the song expresses the anger and rebellion of young generations towards the incomprehension and disdain that are shown to them by the elderly. It is a call to defend one's otherness ( Siamo fuori di testa, ma diversi da loro , “We are crazy, but different from them”) and not just to remain “quiet and good”.

At the Eurovision Song Contest

As usual, the winner of the Sanremo Festival was given the opportunity to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021 for Italy . All participants had to indicate in advance whether they wanted to use this opportunity. Shortly after winning the Sanremo Festival, the band announced that they would represent Italy at the upcoming Grand Prix. As part of the so-called “Big Five”, Italy had already qualified for the final of the competition. At a press conference on May 15, 2021, the band was allocated the second half of the finals by means of a draw. On May 21st it was decided that Måneskin would appear in 24th place out of a total of 26 participants.

In the final of the Eurovision Song Contest on May 22, Italy received a total of 524 points, with 318 points resulting from the telephone vote and 206 points from the juries. Thus, the group won ahead of the entries Voilà from France and Tout l'univers from Switzerland.

publication

The music video for Zitti e buoni was released on March 3, 2021, and the single two days later. The video was directed by Simone Peluso. After winning the Sanremo Music Festival the title appeared on the album of the band entitled I Vol - Teatro d'ira. . The so-called "Eurovision Version" was published on March 16. This was necessary to comply with the rules of the Eurovision Song Contest, which only allow tracks up to three minutes in length. Furthermore, two passages in the text had to be changed because they contained strong expressions and such are not permitted either.
