Wedding room
The ceremonial hall or maid of local (depending on the type as maid room or wedding hall referred to) is a space in which civil ceremonies be performed. Such rooms can be found in the office building of the registry office . In addition, there is the possibility that the registry office determines locations outside the service building where the marriage is possible. Often there are rooms in historical or culturally significant buildings such as castles or palaces or places with an exclusive ambience .
construction
The wedding room often contains a large table at which the bride and groom and the registrar sit opposite each other. Usually there is also space for the groomsmen at the table . The guests usually sit a little apart behind the bride and groom.
Legal
Germany
The place of the wedding is not expressly defined in Germany, although restrictions result from other regulations. The German Civil Code (BGB) only defines in § 1310: Marriage is only concluded when the couple declare in front of the registrar that they want to marry each other. The Civil Status Ordinance - PStV only defines in § 1 that the office of the registry office represents the official seat of the civil registrar, which means that there are corresponding wedding rooms in registry offices, which on the other hand does not exclude other locations.
However, locations outside the office building must continue to be within the jurisdiction of the respective registry office district, as the registrar may only conduct legally binding marriages within these limits. In addition, Section 14 (2) of the Personal Status Act (PStG) stipulates: The marriage should be carried out in a dignified form that corresponds to the significance of the marriage and enables the registrar to properly perform his official act. According to the reasons for the law, the respective decision of the registry office has to be based on the "sense of decency and the general public". In addition, the place of marriage is to be chosen in such a way that it is basically open to all couples due to the principle of equality . Therefore, in general, only privately used properties are excluded from the wedding ceremony.
Austria
In addition to a wedding at the registry office, there is also the option of choosing other wedding locations in Austria. The location must be appropriate and appropriate to the meaning of marriage. The responsible or chosen registry office determines whether a wedding can take place at a different location .
Switzerland
According to the Civil Status Ordinance (ZStV), Article 1a, each civil status district is designated at least one office space that is available free of charge for the implementation of marriages and the establishment of registered partnerships . The use of other premises for the implementation of weddings and the establishment of registered partnerships is subject to the approval of the supervisory authority [...]. It is still not allowed in Switzerland to hold civil marriage ceremonies outdoors.
Belgium
In Belgium there is a restriction that each municipality outside the registry office may only use one different official wedding hall for holding civil weddings.
Wedding ceremony on the high seas
Contrary to popular belief, a captain does not automatically have the same skills as a registrar. That also depends, for example, on the flag under which the ship is sailing. Under the flag of Malta , Bermuda and the Bahamas , captains may marry couples if they are on the high seas , i.e. at least 12 nautical miles from the coast. In ports , on the other hand, the respective state law applies, and captains have no permission to march there. It must also be noted that further steps may be necessary for the marriage to be valid in Germany.
